h ion-zcoustic colkioniess shock has been observed in a single ended Q-device, operating at a density -lo9 ~m -~, subsequent to microwave heating of the electrons. A microwave source tuned to electron gyroresonance can increase the electron/ion temperature ratio to N 13 without appreciable ionization. The shock is produced by electrically gating a line-mesh grid immersed in the plasma; the initial downstreamlupstream density ratio is -7. The shock width is less than 4 per cent of the ion-ion mean free path. The shock profile and Mach number are affected by different T,/T,.ratios and no shock is formed for I < T& < 5 as theory predicts. Comparison of experimental data with numerical simulation is given.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
