La extinción de una respuesta (instrumentalnzente condicionada) suele expresarse por el número de respuestas emitidas hasta que la tasa se estabiliza en un valor próximo a cero. El presente trabajo es un intento de describir con mejores medidas la extinción. Partiendo de tres grupos de ratas sometidas a distintas condiciones de entrenamiento y extinción de la respuesta a la palanca, hemos deducido ecuaciones de extinción de los datos empíricos. Dichas ecuaciones han resultado ser rectas, cuya ordenada en el origen representa lo que se llama la resistencia a la extinción, y cuya pendiente representa la velocidad de extinción (que disminuye en caso de decremento por generalización). Ambos son capaces de distinguir entre grupos que difieren significativamente según análisis de varianza. La integral de dichas rectas (entre tiempo cero y el tiempo transcurrido hasta que cada sujeto hace una. pausa superior o igual a cuatro minutos) es la misma para todos los grupos. La integral es considerada definitoria del proceso de extinción tras determinado número de reforzamientos. Se discuten posibles implicacioizes de estos hallazgos en las formulaciones teóricas del condicionamiento instrumental.
