Background: Helicobacter pylori is a common pathogen, and its prevalence varies with socioeconomic conditions (10-80%). It has recently been recognized as a class I carcinogen in relation to gastric cancer. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of Helicobacter pylori in neoplasms of the colon by immunohistochemical methods.
Intravesical administration of Bacillus Calmette-Guérin is used as a treatment method in superficial bladder cancer. While it is generally well tolerated, serious side effects may develop. Granulomatous hepatitis cases have been previously reported; however, only one case with tuberculous peritonitis exists in the current literature. We hereby present two cases, one of which is the second tubercular peritonitis case following Bacillus Calmette-Guérin treatment to be reported, and the other a case with granulomatous hepatitis. Complete cure was achieved in both cases with specific therapy. In the patient who developed peritonitis, intravesical Bacillus CalmetteGuérin therapy was recommenced after antituberculosis treatment, and completed without further complications.
Background: Inoperable and metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is associated with a poor prognosis and low chemotherapeutic efficiency. Sorafenib is an oral multi-kinase inhibitor exerting its effects via the RAF/ MEK/ERK pathway, vascular endothelial growth factor receptor (VEGFR) and platelet derived growth factor receptor beta (PDGFR-β) tyrosine kinases. Randomized studies have shown a significant contribution of sorafenib to life expectancy and quality of life of cancer patients. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the efficacy and side effects of sorafenib therapy in Turkey. Materials and Methods: Data for 103 patients (82 males, 21 females) receiving sorafenib therapy in 13 centers from February 2008 to December 2012 were evaluated. Median age was 61 years and median ECOG performance status was 1 (range: 0-2). 60 patients (58%) had hepatitis B, 15 patients (15%) had hepatitis C infection and 12 patients (12%) had a history of alcohol consumption. All of the patients had Child scores meeting the utilization permit of the drug in our country (Child A). Results: A total of 571 cycles of sorafenib therapy were administered with a median of four per patient. Among the evaluable cases, there was partial response in 15 (15%), stable disease in 52 (50%), and progressive disease in 36 (35%). Median progression-free survival was 18 weeks and median overall survival was 48 weeks. The dose was reduced only in 6 patients and discontinued in 2 patients due to grade 3-4 toxicity, 18 patients (17%) suffering hand-foot syndrome, 7 (7%) diarrhea, and 2 (2%) vomiting. Conclusions: This retrospective study demonstrated better efficacy of sorafenib therapy in patients with advanced HCC compared to the literature while progression-free survival and overall survival findings were comparable. The side effect rates indicate that the drug was tolerated well. In conclusion, among the available treatment options, sorafenib is an efficient and tolerable agent in patients with inoperable or metastatic HCC.
Background:The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of platelet parameters before concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) on survival of patients with limited disease small cell lung cancer (LD-SCLC). Methods: This study consisted of patients who received CCRT due to LD-SCLC in the oncology clinic between 1997-2017. Examined platelet parameters included total platelet count (TPC), mean platelet volume, platelet distribution width, and platelet-lymphocyte ratio. The cut-off value for TPC was determined as 306x10 9 /U (sensitivity: 62%, specificity: 75.5%), where patients below or equal to this level was classified as Group I, and those above as Group II. Results:The study included 90 patients whose mean age was 59 years (range: 42-83) and male ratio was 80.0% (n=72). Near three-fourths of patients (74.4%) were at clinical stage III. Among stage I-II patients, mOS was found as 126 months for Group I whereas it had not been reached in Group II (p=0.158). Stage III patients showed significantly lower mOS for Group 1 (16 [range: 14.1-17.8] months) compared to that in Group 2 (19.0 [range: 15.6-62.8] months; p=0.002). In multivariate analysis, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance score (p=0.003), clinical stage (p<0.001), prophylactic cranial irradiation (p=0.004), and TPC (p=0.031) was determined as the most significant factors affecting survival. Conclusion: Our study suggests association of high baseline levels of TPC to improved survival in patients scheduled to undergo CCRT for LD-SCLC. Considering easiness and universal availability of TPC measurement, potential utilization of this biomarker may be promising to predict survival, albeit requiring validation by further well-designated prospective studies.
