Accessibility to safe and clean domestic water by households is paramount for personal and developmental health at all levels in Nigeria. Kano State Water Board (KSWB) was saddle with responsibility of domestic water supply to the entire state. The state have about 22 water treatment plants that source, treat and distribute water to the residents of the study area. The data collected were from secondary sources, descriptive statistics was the statistical instruments used in the data analysis. KSWB supply about 415 million litres daily (MLD) to the Kano city and its environs and about 92 MLD to local government headquarters and semi-urban areas. Similarly, there about 50 commercial water standing pumps being operated and maintained by KSWB to ease water supply to nook and crannies of the state.Where pipe borne water is not connected, boreholes, hands pumped and concrete wells are constructed by Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA) to ease water supply at sufficient quality and quantity to rural communities in the state.
Flooding is one of the frequent natural/human-induced phenomena, which occurred annually for decades in Nigeria. This disaster claimed several lives and properties worth more than N6,120 Bn (which is close to the 2016 budget of the country, Nigeria). Flooding usually occurs in Kano because of lack of community participation, blockage of water drainage as well as lack of law enforcement to force people living in prone areas to vacate. The focus group discussion (FGD) was employed as a tool for data collection. The sampling frame is all district-heads, (Local Government Emergency Management agency) LEMA representatives, and other stakeholders in each local government area. The purposive-sampling technique was adopted in selecting the respondents. It is found that the majority of the respondents believed that climate change is one of the causes of flooding. Others include lack of urban planning, indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the drainage, lack of community participation, etc. Some of the responses made by the respondents about their preparedness are after flooding took place. Some of the recommendations made by this paper include non-structural responses, which include more accurate flood forecasting through the use of satellites, high-tech equipment, zoning and land-use policies, insurance programs, evacuation planning, and public enlightenment programs to sensitize people on the consequences of flooding.
The problem of portable water supply has become an issue of global concerned as governments all over the world are trying to make house-holds water accessible to all as easier as possible to meet the challenges for sustainable development goals. This research has been conducted to determine the people’s perception on domestic water supply situation in Kano metropolis, Northwestern Nigeria. A self-designed questionnaire developed and distributed to the subjects using stratified sampling technique, and the data obtained has been presented in frequency and percentage. The results obtained revealed that, there is a scarcity of portable water supply to households in Kano metropolis. The problem emanated from lack of pipe-borne water which necessitated the dependence of the house-holds water supply on vendors that obtained water from boreholes and some hand-dug wells lacking proper hygienic practices. More so, the respondents were willing to pay for pipe borne water delivery, yet, they depend on vendors as their major water suppliers as alternatives. The unhygienic practices of the vendors and water sources posed threat to public health concerned.
