This conceptual paper aims to explore the link between leadership styles and SMEs’ knowledge management strategy. While previous studies have explored different leadership styles’ impacts on knowledge management strategy, they have not illuminated ‘why’ a specific style is more effective. Therefore, this paper fills the gap in the literature by answering two questions: (1) What leadership style is apt to promote knowledge management strategy within SMEs? and (2) Why is the particular leadership style appropriate in SMEs? This paper reviews research related transformational, transactional, servant, paternalistic, facilitative and collaborative leadership, and concludes that transformational leadership is imperative for Malaysian SMEs’ knowledge management. The key implications of this paper are: (1) it sheds light on leadership and knowledge management in SMEs in particular, and (2) it posits transformational leadership as the most appropriate style for knowledge management strategy in Malaysian SMEs.
In today's competition, the private and public sector is taking social media to another level towards achieving their purposes, whether to improve profitability of the company or to improve organizational performance. Ubiquitous and innovative ICTs provide different communication channels for the public to give feedbacks on the services given the public sector. As such, social media provides an opportunity to gather feedbacks and responses towards improving services. The purpose of this paper is to give a background on leveraging social media to improve services in the Malaysian government sector. Based on the study background, observations and content analysis on the social media pages were carried out for the purpose of the study. It is understood that leveraging social media does have an advantage to give insights for successful social media implementation and can give a positive organizational effect to the departments.
Calendar is a tool that tells us a date. While Gregorian calendars have been used worldwide, Hijrah calendar becomes a choice for Muslims. This Islamic calendar helps tells a user a date in Islam. Our previous study suggested that the Muslim elderly preferred to have Islamic mobile calendar. Despite abundance of Islamic mobile calendar applications, little was known whether any of them were usable for the elderly users. This study recommends a usable design of an Islamic mobile calendar for Muslim elderly users. To do this, a user test with five elderly participants was carried out and two existing Islamic calendars were used as probes. Later, two interfaces were produced and tested with our elderly participants. Based on the results and design principles, the interfaces of the Islamic mobile calendar have further been improved.
Grain corn in nature possesses a tendency to absorb and release moisture even during storage. Grain respiration will lead to fungal growth, consequently mycotoxin development and decreased nutritional components. Storage in tropical weather like Malaysia, in which the temperature is constantly hot throughout the year (temperature 23–33°C, with relative humidity around 81%) will promote further spoilage to the stored grain corn. Therefore, this paper discussed the properties of grain corn during three months of storage in a Malaysian weather setting. Grain corn with the initial moisture content of 12.5± 0.02% MC bagged in the; a) woven polypropylene jumbo bags, b) woven propylene 40 kg bag and c) plastic sealed container was stored in two different storage facilities located in MARDI for three months. The grain corn after three months of storage showed a consistent water activity, a darkening value in Chroma index, within the permissible limit of fungal growth and exhibits insect pest development of two major species of Coleoptera family. Grain corn is considered safe after three months of storage because low aflatoxin levels have been found, but the physical structure has been compromised due to insect pest infestations.
