Als Hauptbestandteil des menschlichen Organismus bildet es in seiner Eigenschaft als Lösungs-, Verteilungs-und Wärmeregulationsmittel eine Voraussetzung zum Leben. Es ist daher verständlich, daß der individuelle Wassergehalt des Körpers mit einer gewissen Schwankungsbreite um ein physiologisches Optimum ziemlich konstant erhalten wird. Wenn auch einzelne Faktoren dieses Regelmechanismus aufgeklärt worden sind, so ist die komplexe Natur dieses ordnenden Prinzips noch weitgehend ungeklärt. So haben Gauer und Henry bei Untersuchungen über die Homöostase des extraarteriellen Kreislaufs erstmals eine selbständige Volumenregulation der Körperflüssigkeiten nachgewiesen.
