This literature review looked at relevant research articles published in reputable journals from 2018 to 2022 to try to shed light on the areas: (1) Implications of using thematic progression pattern to improve the coherence and unity of student essays and (2) The effects of thematic problems using the thematic progression approach in the student's essay. Even though thematic progression has been studied a lot, it is still interesting to see how much scholars have looked into it, especially in the context of the second and foreign language. The previous studies had consistently confirmed the following results: (1) thematic progression contributes to the coherence and cohesion quality of student essays (2) problematic thematic progression in student essays includes the emergence of the brand-new theme, overuse of constant pattern, empty rheme or undeveloped rheme, double rheme, intervening material between rheme, incomplete of the clause, subsequent thematization, confusing selection of textual theme, empty themes, themes with undefined reference and thematization of rheme and lack of thematic progression & loosely thematic flow. for further research, other researcher can make a review article who emphasis on thematic progression in the aspect of various fields, genres of text or non-academic texts produced by students to look the cohesive and coherent aspects of the student's writing.

The acquisition of Malay as a second language, either verbally or non verbally among the non-Malay students, is still in question. It is observed that the problems of pronunciation is still prevalent among the non-Malay students. Hence, the objectives of this study are twofold; (i) to identify the level of proficiency of the speaking skill of Malay language among Chinese students, and (ii) to analyse the errors made in the speaking skill of Malay language by Chinese students based on contrastive analysis theory. The respondents were 27 Chinese Form 1 students in SMK Ampang Pecah, Kuala Kubu Baharu, Selangor. The initial design of the study was spurred by library research and observation. The instruments used in data collection included notebooks, questionnaire, recorder and texts for speech test. The data were analyzed by contrastive analysis theory by Robert Lado (1957). The findings showed that there were four aspects of pronunciation errors related consonants produced by the respondents. They were (i) sound replacement, (ii) sound addition, (iii) sound abortion, (iv) and grammatical errors. This study also shows that the pronunciation errors were due to the influence of their native language, which is Mandarin language, and the interlingual factors of the respondents that have caused them to be weak in the mastery of Malay language. In terms of implication, this study provides some understanding on the importance of mastering oral speech in Malay language through appropriate grammatical usage and pronunciation , especially among the second language speakers of Malay.

A survey was conducted on 380 students of several universities in Malaysia. The data were collected by using Google Form with cooperation from university representatives. The quantitative data was analyzed by using SPSS and AMOS software through correlation and regression analysis by structural equation modelling (SEM). Findings showed that the most decency form used by students was words with value β=.67, p=.000. Language decency education had contributed 80% of R2 value for language character among students. The prediction model of relationship between decency language and character language had achieved equivalence value which RMSEA=.067, GFI=.977, CFI=.995, TLI=.991 and Chisq/df=2.682. Therefore, factor of decency language that applies among students in Malay language course can contribute on generation with nice language character and strong national identity.
Criticisms in traditional Malay works are produced in various forms, and usually, the criticisms are not conveyed in an explicit or blunt manner. Therefore, the language used to convey the criticisms is figurative language filled with similes and metaphors. These forms of criticisms can be observed in proverbs, pantuns, and other forms of poems, songs, tales of humour and of animals, folktales, sagas, and historical literature. Social criticisms through metaphorical elements in poems are able to depict the wisdom of the Malays in the times of old. This paper aims to identify the metaphorical elements found in pantuns and analyse the social criticisms and values in them based on the Relevance theory. It will see how metaphors in pantuns play the role of social critics. Data used for this study is from a book by Tenas Effendy (2004) titled Tunjuk Ajar Dalam Pantun Melayu, published in Yogyakarta by Balai Kajian dan Pengembangan Budaya Melayu. This study will apply the Relevance theory, where this theory emphasises the processing of information and is able to assist readers to understand the metaphorical elements that are scientifically represented. Thus, social criticisms that exist in traditional Malays pantuns are not only for entertainment purposes but also carry a far deeper meaning. Pantuns have metaphorical elements where they are able to create cynical and sharp criticisms.
