Ectopic salivary gland tissue (ESGT) is salivary tissue located outside the major, minorand accessory salivary glands. Neoplasms rarely arise from ESGT, let alone carcinoma expleomorphicadenoma (CEPA) which is a malignant tumour that arises from the epithelialcomponent of pleomorphic adenoma. It usually occurs in the parotid gland and in lesserinstances, from submandibular gland or minor salivary glands. Herein, we report a rare caseof CEPA in right supraclavicular ESGT of a 67-year-old lady. She underwent complete surgicalexcision of the mass and is free from any recurrence to date. Brief review of pathogenesis, clinical features and treatment of ectopic CEPA are discussed. A thorough review of the Englishliterature reveals that our patient may be the second case of ectopic CEPA in the neck regionever reported to date. Ectopic thyroid tissue occurs in about 1 in 10,000 people. It can be seen anywhere from foramen caecum to lower neck region. But, it is rarely seen in a lateral neck mass, especially in branchial cleft cyst. Transformation to a malignant state in an ectopic thyroid tissue is uncommon, with most of the diagnoses found routinely through the post-operative histopathological analysis. Hereby, we report a rare case of an ectopic papillary thyroid carcinoma with an initial pre-operative diagnosis of a branchial cleft cyst. However, no primary thyroid gland malignancy was found. The pathophysiology and rarity of these disorders are explored. A high index of suspicion of ectopic tissue and malignancy must be in mind while attending to patients with long-standing, uninvestigated lateral neck masses. Excision biopsy and histopathological study are the two definitive steps to be undertaken.

Aims: To evaluate the diagnostic value of CD31 immunohistochemical (IHC) investigation in neoplastic lesions of the uterine cervix among patients of Hospital Tuanku Jaafar (HTJ), Seremban, Malaysia. Methods: This is a retrospective correlation study constituting 105 cases in total, selected over a 10-year period from March 2005 to March 2015. It was conducted in the research laboratories of the International Medical University, Bukit Jalil, and sample collection was performed at the Department of Pathology of HTJ. Patients diagnosed with “cervicitis”, “cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) grades I through III” and “squamous cell carcinoma” were included in the study. Non-epithelial cervical lesions were excluded. Demographic data and representative paraffin blocks with H&E slides of each case were reviewed. Sectioned samples were stained immunohistochemically with CD31 to mark endothelial cells. Staining density of the microvessels was then observed under high power. The average of three hotspots per sample was obtained and recorded as the microvascular density (MVD) score. Means for each diagnostic group were tabulated and results were statistically analysed using SPSS version 18.Results: Patients’ age ranged from 23 to 85 years with mean of 49.2 years. Cases of carcinoma were most prevalent among 60-69 year-olds. Mean MVD score increases with increasing dysplasia from cervicitis (8.84), CIN (12.57) to carcinoma cervix (29.6).Conclusion: MVD CD31 immunohistochemistry investigation can aid in differentiating cervical lesions; benign, intraepithelial neoplasia and invasive malignancy, and could play an adjuvant role in diagnosing neoplastic cervical lesions.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
