Purpose -This paper aims to introduce the efficiency improvement in the operating room (OR) of a local hospital using the integration of simulation and optimization. Design/methodology/approach -Based on the simulation model, a Tabu search (TS) algorithm is developed as an optimizer for the meta-heuristic optimization method to find the optimum configuration of resources for the OR operation. Findings -The computational efficiency is improved for the optimum search. Results show that 21 percent more patients can be processed compared to the existing operation. The average time stay of patients in the OR is reduced by 17 percent. Research limitations/implications -Limited resources considered in the model may limit the capacity of the proposed method, more resources including nurses, beds in post-operative units, and beds in inpatient wards will be included in the decision variables. Practical implications -Long waiting lists in the OR lead to the low performance of healthcare systems. It is crucial to identify inefficiency and to improve the OR operation efficiently. Originality/value -The TS-based heuristic optimizing method developed in this research shows the promise in time saving of the optimal solution search for the OR efficiency improvement.
The computer simulation technology of the work process of internal-combustion engine is the important measure to study the internal-combustion engine, but generally, because of the uncertainty of input parameters, the precision of the simulation model of the engine work process, which largely limits the application of the simulation model, so the parameters of the simulation model needs to be calibrated. Taking the work process of the certain one type turbocharging diesel engine as the example, and combining the genetic algorithm with the ant colony algorithm, the parameter combination which can satisfy the requirements of precision, is selected in this article to effectively reduce the simulation experiment times of parameter calibration, and realize the automatic calibration of the simulation model parameters. By comparing and analyzing the practical result of the experiment and the result of the simulation computation, the effectiveness of the algorithm has been validated in the article.
The operating room (OR) is one of the most demanding departments in Winnipeg Health Science Center (WHSC). The problems faced to the OR are the long waiting list of patients and the inefficient utilization of human resources and facilities. The OR needs to treat a large variety of patient types versatility and dynamically. A discrete event simulation tool is used for modeling the OR operation. The major work involving in this research includes data collection, simulation modeling, model validation and output analysis. The initial results have shown the simulation potential in the performance improvement of healthcare systems
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
