Die lineare Struktur von 2.4-Dimethyl-benzochinolin (1) (Combes Base) laRt sich durch dessen Entmethylierung zum Benzok]chinolin beweisen. Wie schon fruher mitgeteilt 11, liefert die durch Oxydation des Monobenzyliden-Derivates von I entstehende Carbonsaure bei der Decarboxylierung das bekannte 2-Methyl-benzo[g]chinolin. Wir fanden jetzt, daR sich auch die Distyrylverbindungen I1 und 111 durch Kondensation von I mit uberschiissigem Benzaldehyd bzw. m-Nitro-benzaldehyd in geringen Ausbeuten erhalten lassen. Infolge geringer Reaktionsfreudigkeit der Methylgruppe in 2-Stellung sind hierfur lange Reaktionszeiten erforderlich.H Kaliumpermanganat in Aceton oxydiert 111 zur Dicarbonsaure IV. Die alkoholische Lasung von 1V zeigt die fur Benzo[g]chinolin charakteristische grunliche Fluoreszenz und gibt mit Eisen(l1)-sulfat eine Farbreaktion, die auf eine zum Ringstickstoff a-standige Carboxylgruppe hinweist. Durch Erhitzen im Vakuum wird IV zu einer Monocarbonsaure decarboxyliert. Da diese mit Eisen(I1)-sulfat einen negativen Farbtest gibt, ist die Carboxylgruppe dem Ringstickstoff nicht benachbart und der Verbindung kommt somit die Konstitution V zu. Erhitzt man 1V mit wenig Kupferbronze im Vakuum auf 280", so werden beide Carboxylgruppen eliminiert und man erhalt die bekannte Base VII. Verbindung VIl wurde von J. v. BRAWN und H. GRU-B E R~) synthetisiert und in der Struktur eindeutig festgelegt. Damit ist auch der lineare Bau von 2.4-Dimethyl-benzochinolin (1) bewiesen, wie er ursprunglich von W. S. JOHNSON und F. J. MATHEWS~) vorgeschlagen und spater von uns 1) bestatigt wurde. Combes Base kommt also Struktur I und nicht Formel VIlI zu. uber die Darstellung von IV berichteten bereits A. STAEHELIN~) sowie A. ETIENNE und A. STAEHELIN~). WIhrend diese Autoren fur die Verbindung den Schmelzpunkt 341 -342" bzw. 3 16-3 17' angeben, fanden wir den Schmelzpunkt 229". Ferner berichtet die Literatur 4,s) ubereinstimmend mit uns -, daB 1V durch einfaches Erhitzen im Vakuum auf 270" voll-1) I. Mitteil.: N. SINGH und A. B. LAL, J. Indian chem. SOC. 41, 352 [1964].
