MotivationProteins are the building-blocks of life. However with the deluge of data on protein sequences and their association with diseases, it is imperative to use computational tools to aid experimental analysis. Determination of the impact of disease-causing SNPs on protein’s structure is crucial in discovering how a disease affects the functions on a fundamental level and thereafter, determining potential drug targets.ResultsSNPs associated with the genetic disease permanent neonatal diabetus mellitus (PNDM) were studied to determine their impact on human insulin. Out of 16 missense variants, eight were predicted to be deleterious. 6 of the SNPs resulted in high structural differences (RMSD > 0.9, H bonds > 35). Stability changes were also determined.
Medication administration requires comprehensive knowledge about drug dosage calculation and its related knowledge. In order to build this skill, the curriculum of nursing education includes basic mathematics, drug dosage calculation and a pharmacology course. In our nursing school, during the BScN year two semester II it was identified that few students are encountering problem related to these courses and thus they are not scoring well although it is expected to get 100% in mathematics and drug calculation whereas 70% passing grade is needed in pharmacology. Case based scenarios were planned as a strategy to support the students' learning. The faculties planned scenarios with integration of pharmacology and drug calculation and prepare some reading material to be send prior to the tutorial. This helped in improving the score of the student. At the same time some challenges were identified that scheduling at the mid of the semester is difficult due to booked venues and faculty hours. Therefore, scheduling extra time for tutorial increased workloads for faculty and students, students at times were not coming prepared for tutorial day. It is advised that such remedial strategies shall be consider in the planning phase of the semester, use of ICT will help in self-directed learning and continuous development of scenario shall be practiced.
This study aims to assess retention of drug dose calculation knowledge of undergraduate nursing students studying at a private school of nursing. This is a pre and post comparison design conducted at Aga Khan University, Pakistan from August, 2017 to September, 2019. All students enrolled in Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) - Class of 2019 were enrolled. Mean test scores of 141 fourth year BScN students were compared with their own performance in second year. Mean scores on mathematics and drug dosage calculation test decreased significantly from 21 in 2nd year of studies to 17.97 in final year of studies. Modifications in assessments as well as curriculum are suggested to improve retention of dose calculation skills among undergraduate nursing students.
