This paper examines the production of verbs with different argument structure (unergative, unaccusative, anti-causative, transitive and ditransitive verbs) at different stages of first language acquisition, with the aim of contributing to the ongoing nature-nurture debate. Twenty verbs were tested (four verbs of each type). A total of eighteen subjects belonging to six age groups (18-21, 23-25, 31-33, 35-38, 39-43 and 48-52 months -three participants each) took part in this pilot research. Visual stimuli were used in a verb elicitation task. Though the sample was small, significant among-group differences were noted. The results show that children at a lower stage of language development have more difficulty producing verbs with a complex argument structure. The acquisition of verbs starts with transitive and unergative verbs, followed by unaccusative verbs. The production of ditransitive and anti-causative verbs is delayed.
Alternative methods in teaching literature are increasingly used nowadays. Teachers often opt for teaching Shakespeare's plays in a nontraditional way, mostly because of the changing reading habits and ubiquitous digital environment. The aim of the present research was to examine students' attitude towards a modern theatrical adaptation of Hamlet. Six students took part in a workshop, which was organized after watching the performance. The conclusions reached in the workshop indicate that, although the students' reactions to the play were quite positive, not all of them prefer modern to traditional concepts of reading and classical literature. Younger students support the idea of innovation combined with classical literature more. However, a study which would include more participants and focus on a sharper contrast between experiencing traditional and more modern versions of literary works is needed to confirm these tendencies.
The paper examines a variety of affective-motivational characteristics of two talented foreign language learners. The purpose of the case study is to present an affective-motivational profile of a gifted L2 English teenage student. The EPI (Emotions Profile Index) test for testing personality and the Intrinsic Motivation Inventory test for testing motivation were used as instruments. The study has revealed that two different profiles of gifted students can be distinguished: artistic and scientific. As far as their motivation is concerned, the results have shown that gifted students can be both intrinsically and extrinsically oriented. The conclusion is that different emotional and motivational characteristics of talented students need to be taken into account in order to create an effective curriculum. Further investigation in the field is required, so as to confirm these results.
