INTRODUÇÃOO envelhecimento populacional é um dos maiores desafios da saúde pública contemporânea. Este fenômeno ocorreu de início em países desenvolvidos, no entanto, recentemente vem ocorrendo nos países em desenvolvimento de forma acentuada.Nos países desenvolvidos o envelhecimento se deu de forma lenta e gradual, apoiado pelo progresso socioeconômico, com consequente melhoria nas condições de vida da população. Fato diferente é vivenciado pelos países em desenvolvimento, em que o retrato do envelhecimento se dá de forma rápida, com pouca ou nenhuma estruturação política, econômica e social que ampare este grupo de pessoas.No Brasil, os dados estatísticos mostram o aumento da longevidade no país. Atualmente, o número de idosos é de aproximadamente 20,5 milhões, 11% da população nacional. No início do século XX, o brasileiro vivia em média 33 anos, em 2000 a expectativa de vida dos brasileiros atingiu 68 anos. Estima-se que em 2025 este número chegue a 1,2 bilhão, ou seja, aproximadamente 30% da população brasileira (1) . Observa-se que o envelhecimento acarreta alterações no organismo como um todo e à medida que elas vão se processando, passam a requerer do indivíduo várias adaptações. Neste contexto, as estruturas responsáveis pela resposta sexual também são afetadas, gerando modificações e necessidade de adaptações. Desta forma, falar da sexualidade e do envelhecimento, nos dias atuais, significa falar de dois temas fascinantes, mas, ao mesmo tempo, ainda repletos de preconceitos e tabus. Muitas vezes os sentimentos, as necessidades e as relações sexuais são vistos como privilégios dos mais jovens, contrapondo a perspectiva de que é possível ao idoso manter-se ativo sexualmente e satisfeito com sua vida sexual (2) . Ao não atentar para o idoso enquanto um sujeito com vida sexual ativa, a sociedade não levanta possibilidades também de construção e promoção de medidas preventivas, necessárias para atingir esta faixa etária da população. Diante disto, estudos informam que a visão acerca do idoso como um ser assexuado ou incapaz de produzir desejos em outras pessoas, acrescida do advento do uso de várias medicações, aumenta sua vulnerabilidade frente à exposição às doenças sexualmente transmissíveis (DST) e à aids (3) .
