Kurşun mühürler (Molybdobullae), yazılı kaynakların bıraktığı boşlukları tamamlayan nitelikleriyle Bizans kurumları ve Bizans prosopografisi alanında önem arz eden kaynaklardır. Bu çalışmada Edirne Müzesi'nde bulunan VIII. yüzyıldan XII. yüzyıla kadarki döneme tarihlenen on üç adet yayınlanmamış kurşun mühür tanıtılmıştır. Bu mühürler sırasıyla Konstantinopolis Patriği III. Germanos (1265-1266)'a, magistros vestēs ve tüm Batı Orduları doux'u Nikēphoros Vatatzēs (XI. yüzyıl)'e, Selevkeia metropoliti Theodoros (787)'a, Tarsos ve Seleukeia kensor, kritēs ve megas kourator'u Nicholas Serblias (XI. yüzyıl ortaları)'a, Kotradia (İsauria) Başpiskoposu Michaēl'e, Seleukeia Theması stratēgos ve anagrapheus'u Leon Vlangas (1050)'a, patrikios basilikos protospatharios epi tou chrysotriklinou Krinetēs (IX. yüzyıl sonu/X. yüzyıl başı)'e, anthypatos patrikios basilikos protospatharios Megas Heteriarchēs Theophylaktos (X. yüzyıl)'a, İmparator IV. Romanos Diogenēs, imparatoriçe Evdokia (Makrembolitissa), VII. Michaēl (Dukas), Konstantinos (Dukas) ve Andonikos (Dukas) (1068-1071)'a, Leo (Pantherios) Komnenodukas (XII. yüzyıl)'a aittir. Söz konusu sigillografik malzeme, ait oldukları dönemde Bizans başkenti ile Thrakia bölgesi arasındaki ve Seleukeia ile Thrakia bölgeleri arasındaki bağlantıların olduğu kadar, mühürlerin sahiplerinin Thrakia ile iletişimlerine dair önemli veriler sunması bakımından özel bir önemi haizdir.
Bu çalışmada Kırklareli Müzesi envanterinde bulunan M.S. 6. yüzyıldan 12. yüzyılın üçüncü çeyreğine kadarki döneme ait yedi adet kurşun mühür sigillografik olarak ilk defa incelenmiş ve değerlendirilmiştir. Bu materyalin bir kısmı satın alma yoluyla bir kısmı da kaçakçıların elinden mahkeme kararıyla istirdat edilmek suretiyle müze envanterine girmiştir. Kırklareli Müzesi'ndeki sigillografik materyalin ait olduğu şahıslar Theodora Komnena (11. yüzyıl), Nikephoros Kontostephanos Komnenodukas (12. yüzyıl), protospathariοs ve Makedonia Theması stratēgosu Theodoros (11. yüzyıl), protoproedros ve doux Konstantinos Opos (11. yüzyıl sonu-12. yüzyıl başı), hypatos ve Thessaloniki eparchosu Agallianos (9. yüzyılın ilk yarısı), Anonim bir şahıs (11. yüzyılın son çeyreği) ve Kleméntos ya da Komentiólos (6.-7. yüzyıl)'tur.
Bizans veliaht prensi IV. Andronikos Palaiologos ile Osmanlı şehzadesi Savcı Çelebi'nin işbirliği yaparak babalarına karşı darbe girişiminde bulunmaları Bizans-Osmanlı ilişkileri tarihinin en ilginç olaylarından biridir. Tarihçilerin özel olarak ilgisini çekmeyen bu olay hakkında bilgi veren 14., 15. ve 16. yüzyıl Venedik, Bizans ve Osmanlı kroniklerinin bilgileri parça parça ve dağınık haldedir. Bu çalışmada söz konusu kaynakların karşılaştırılması sonucunda IV. Andronikos'un 1373 yılında babası ve Sultan I. Murad'a karşı gösterdiği direnişte sadece Murad'ın oğlu Savcı'dan değil, fakat meçhul bir Osmanlı şehzadesiyle Osmanlı idaresinden bağımsız olarak uçlarda (Trakya'da) askeri faaliyette bulunan Türk unsurlarından destek gördüğü sonucuna vardık.
Kurşun mühürler (Molybdobullae), Bizans merkez ve eyalet teşkilatı tarihi ve prosopografisi alanında sundukları verilerle yazılı kaynakların bilgilerini doğrulayan ve bu kaynakların karanlıkta bıraktığı hususları aydınlatan çok önemli tarihsel kaynaklardır. Bu çalışmada Giresun Müzesi envanterinde bulunan ve 6. yüzyıldan 12. yüzyıla kadarki döneme ait olan on beş adet yayınlanmamış kurşun mühür tanıtılmaktadır. Söz konusu envanterin özellikle bir kısmının (env. no: 1-8) Giresun sakinlerinden bir şahıstan mahkeme yoluyla alınması dolayısıyla kesin olarak kent civarında bulunmuş olduğunu düşünüyoruz. Bunlardan ilk ikisi, adı yazılı kaynaklarda geçmeyen ve varlığından günümüze ulaşan kurşun mühür sayesinde haberdar olduğumuz Paphlagonia douxu Theodoros Komnenos (1070-1080)"a aittir. Theodoros, ilk mühürde kouropalates onursal unvanı ile doux makam unvanını, ikincisinde ise ykl. 1085 yılında terfi ettirildiğinin kanıtı olarak nobelissimos onursal unvanını taşımaktadır. Seleukeia ve Kıbrıs valiliği yapmış Aleksios Kassianos (12. yüzyıl)"a ait olan mühür müze envanterindeki kayda değer bir diğer malzemedir. Piskopos İoannes (11. yüzyıl) ile Kerasous (Giresun)daki ya da civarındaki manastırlardan birinde keşiş olan Amphilochios"a ait olan mühürler kentin ekklesiyastik prosopografisine ışık tutmaktadır. Kerasous"ta apo eparchon, hypatos ve stratelates olarak hizmet etmiş görevlilere ait altı mühür dışındaki üç mühür ise anonim niteliktedir.
