In the first half of the 19th century, one of the urgent tasks of Russian authorities was to ensure governors’ and other officials’ professionalism and efficiency. The Imperial Lyceum whose graduates were expected to occupy positions in the government, was created to solve this urgent task. The article analyzes previously uninvestigated archival materials. The author of the article attempts to trace lyceum graduates’ careers as governors in the 1860s during the Great Reforms when qualified and efficient officials were highly needed.
