A rriedrich Cerhas Netzwerk, ein Bühnenwerk für Bariton, Sopran, fünf Sprecher, Bewegungsgruppe und Orchester, wurde als Auftragswerk des Kuhuramtes der Stadt Wien während der Wiener Festwochen 1981 im Theater an der Wien uraufgeführt. Die Anfänge der Komposition weisen auf Exercises (1962-67) für Bariton, Sprecher und Ensemble zurück, die direkt im Anschluß an Spiegel I-VII (1960/61) entstanden sind; die endgültige Bühnenfassung von Netzwerk wurde jedoch erst in den Jahren 1978-80 fertiggestellt. Die Entstehungsgeschichte von Netzwerk spannt so einen Bogen von einer Avantgarde-Ästhetik der frühen 1960er bis in eine Zeit, in welcher das Komponieren mit dem ehemaligen "Kanon des Verbotenen"' ästhetisch legitim geworden war. Diese Veränderungen der ästhetischen Perspektive erfahren in der Struktur von Netzwerk ihre Spiegelung und werden durch die Anlage des Stückes selbst thematisiert, was sich besonders im Verhältnis der Hauptszenen zu den zwischen diesen Hauptteilen liegenden Regressen, die sich hinsichtlich ihres musikalischen Materials rückschrittlich verhalten, zeigt. So betrafen die Erweiterungen, die von Exercises zu Netzwerk führten, auch weniger die (puristischeren) Hauptteile als vielmehr die (heterogenen) Regresse, die umgebildet und im Verlauf der Komposition durch weitere Regresse ergänzt wurden.^ Mit der Verflechtung unterschiedlicher (Material-)Ebenen innerhalb der Musik geht eine Vernetzung verschiedener Kunstformen einher, wobei die unterschiedlichen Schichten des Stückes -Musik, Sprache, Bewegung, Licht, Bühnengeschehenineinandergreifen, jedoch dabei ihre Eigenständigkeit bewahren. Welt -Mensch: Welttheater Netzwerk stellt, hierin an die Tradition des barocken Welttheaters anknüpfend, den Menschen aus unendlicher Ferne betrachtet dar, wie er sich ähnlich einem Insektenstaat Ordnungssysteme schafft, sich diesen unterwirft, sie in seinem grenzenüberwindenden Freiheitsdrang bekämpft und zerstört, um sich letztendlich wieder anderen, von ihm selbst neu geschaffenen Ordnungen zu unterwerfen. Dieses menschliche Bedürfnis nach Ordnung findet seine Genese in der Sehnsucht nach übergeordneter, zeitenthobener Verankerung der eigenen Existenz, und ermöglicht
