Der Literaturwissenschaftler und -kritiker Niklas Bender untersucht an ausgewählten Beispielen der modernen und der Gegenwartsliteratur, wie das Lesen von Literatur heute dazu beitragen kann, das Leben sinnvoll zu gestalten.
Im ersten Teil seines Essays nimmt der Autor eine Diagnose der digitalen Gegenwart vor, die uns mit einem Überangebot an möglichen Existenzweisen überhäuft. An den Beispielen Flaubert, Pirandello und Houellebecq zeigt er auf, wie Romane einen guten Umgang mit dieser Überflutung lehren können – gerade durch Erzählwelten, in denen Lebenswege auch einmal verpasst und Potenziale nicht immer genutzt werden. Im zweiten Teil wird anhand von drei Dichtern der Moderne und der Gegenwart (Baudelaire, Montale und Nico Bleutge) veranschaulicht, auf welche Weise Lyrik uns das Ergreifen von intensiven Momenten vor Augen zu führen vermag. Im dritten Teil des Buches wird ein weiterer aktueller Aspekt hervorgehoben: das (etwa in den sozialen Medien) allgegenwärtige Storytelling, das mit mehr oder weniger lobenswerten Absichten unsere Existenz in erzählerische Bahnen zu lenken versucht. Die beiden Lehren der Literatur – die Pflege des Möglichkeits- und des Augenblickssinns – können uns helfen, die Mechanismen des Storytelling aufzubrechen und unsere Lebensgeschichte sowohl komplexer als auch intensiver zu gestalten. Sie ermuntern uns und leiten uns an, ein selbstbestimmtes Leben zu führen.

Ils abordèrent la Comédie-qui est l'école des nuances. » 1 Les textes littéraires modernes qui mettent en scène la figure du savant empruntent souvent des personnages, des motifs, des structures ou des procédés aux genres dramatiques 2. L'insatisfaction notoire du scientifique, l'écart entre la connaissance acquise et le bonheur personnel espéré, les possibilités fournies par le savoir et la tentation diabolique qui en résulte-c'est l'option tragique, moderne, choisie par la littérature d'inspiration romantique. L'incarnation exemplaire en est le Faust de Goethe 3 , ou bien-dans une version fantastique-le double protagoniste de Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde de Stevenson. Mais il existe également des écrivains qui ont choisi de représenter plutôt le ridicule des prétentions à la connaissance, la platitude du discours scientifique luimême, l'écart entre la connaissance théorique et son application-c'est là l'option comique. Elle tire son origine du traitement satirique réservé aux érudits de la Renaissance, plus tard les Femmes savantes de Molière, mais aussi le Pangloss voltairien (Candide) prennent le relais ; au XX e siècle, cette tendance se retrouve chez Céline (Courtial dans Mort à crédit) et chez Joyce (Leopold Bloom dans Ulysses). Les deux options, tragique et comique, se définissent de la façon suivante : soit le savoir aiguise la conscience, parfois jusqu'au désespoir, en creusant le gouffre entre le sujet et le monde qui l'entoure ; soit l'oeuvre exhibe le mésusage, voire l'insuffisance du savoir, c'est-à-dire son manque de profondeur et son peu de prise sur les phénomènes. Si une figure de savant (ou bien l'un de ses précurseurs) occupe le premier rôle dans un roman, celui-ci module sa perspective en fonction de ces options dramatiques. Le roman, genre ouvert par excellence, exerce alors sa capacité d'intégration. Dans ses oeuvres, Flaubert explore les deux filons dramatiques : dans sa somptuosité et son déchirement nocturnes, la Tentation de saint Antoine se place plutôt dans la perspective de Faust.
