An incidental left adrenal mass was found in a patient during an evaluation for mediastinal widening. The patient had no symptoms attributable to adrenal excess. Preoperative biochemical screening was negative for a functioning medullary or cortical adrenal tumor. Surgical resection was successfully completed with the assistance of the da Vinci robotic system. Pathology demonstrated a rare adrenal oncocytoma.
Cardiac surgeons have embraced minimally invasive surgery with warranted enthusiasm. The acceleration of technological advances in optics, instrumentation, and cardiopulmonary bypass has allowed safe, effective, efficient minimally invasive cardiac procedures. In this article we review the evolution of and early experience with robot-assisted mitral valve surgery. Articles by leaders in the field of minimally invasive cardiac surgery, both American and European, are reviewed to describe the development of cardiac robotic surgery. The current state of robotic mitral surgery is described.
Robotic mitral valve surgery is a procedure that is gaining widespread popularity. The patient of today and the future will demand minimally invasive operations. Initial clinical experience with robotic systems will allow further developments. Ultimately, this may result in completely endoscopic heart surgery.
