El biogás, constituye una alternativa para producir energía térmica, eléctrica o como combustible vehicular, utilizando como materia prima residuos sólidos orgánicos urbanos y rurales. Este biocombustible gaseoso representa una solución multipropósito para contribuir a que Colombia enfrente la reducción de emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero, el manejo de los residuos sólidos urbanos, la seguridad y reducción de la dependencia energética del sector hidroeléctrico y de combustibles fósiles. Este artículo busca evidenciar limitaciones que enfrenta el impulso del biogás como fuente renovable de energía en Colombia, tanto para sustituir leña o combustibles fósiles como para generar energía, a través de un análisis de la regulación y políticas que aplicarían para cada fase de su ciclo de vida: i) los residuos sólidos como materia prima, ii) la producción y consumo de biogás y iii) y producción y consumo de biofertilizantes como subproducto, encontrando que es una energía que encierra cierta complejidad en cuanto a la red de actores involucrados y armonización de políticas y normativas que dificulta la ejecución de proyectos, pero que puede ser superada trabajando con una visión de conjunto e integral, de lo cual ya se tiene alguna experiencia en curso en el país a través de los Planes de Energización Rural Sostenible y la Estrategia de Desarrollo Baja en Carbono.
