School based interventions are required to reduce the morbidity associated with non-communicable diseases.

Cellular cannibalism, defined as a large cell enclosing a slightly smaller one within its cytoplasm. In this review, we discussed the morphology, possible mechanism, and the cytological significance of cannibalism in relation to malignancy. Cannibalism is a completely different entity than phagocytosis, entosis, and emeriopoliosis. It is an important morphologic feature to distinguish benign from malignant lesions. Cannibalism has been described in various cancers such as, bladder cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, etc, and this is related with the aggressiveness of the malignancy.

The study assessed the potential for use of millets in mid-day school meal programs for better nutritional outcomes of children in a peri-urban region of Karnataka, India, where children conventionally consumed a fortified rice-based mid-day meal. For a three-month period, millet-based mid-day meals were fed to 1500 adolescent children at two schools, of which 136 were studied as the intervention group and were compared with 107 other children in two other schools that did not receive the intervention. The intervention design was equivalent to the parallel group, two-arm, superiority trial with a 1:1 allocation ratio. The end line allocation ratio was 1.27:1 due to attrition. It was found that there was statistically significant improvement in stunting (p = 0.000) and the body mass index (p = 0.003) in the intervention group and not in the control group (p = 0.351 and p = 0.511, respectively). The sensory evaluation revealed that all the millet-based menu items had high acceptability, with the highest scores for the following three items: finger millet idli, a steam cooked fermented savory cake; little and pearl millet bisi belle bath, a millet-lentil hot meal; and upma, a pearl and little millet-vegetable meal. These results suggest significant potential for millets to replace or supplement rice in school feeding programs for improved nutritional outcomes of children.

SummaryCystic fibrosis (CF) is an autosomal recessive disease caused by mutations in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene. This study was performed on Indian CF patients (n = 50) to investigate the spectrum of mutations in the CFTR gene and their association with intragenic and extragenic marker haplotypes. We report identification of 14 previously known and eight novel mutations, namely 3986-3987delC, 876-6del4, 1792InsA, L69H, S158N, Q493L, I530L and E1329Q. The frequency of delta F508 was found to be 27%. Absolute linkage between delta F508 and the KM.19-GATT-TUB9-M470V-T854T haplotype (2-2-1-1-1) predicts a relatively recent appearance of delta F508 in Indian CF patients. Low frequency of delta F508 mutation and detection of eight novel and thirteen rare mutations reflect a heterogeneous spectrum of mutations in Indian CF patients. Failure to detect mutations in 34% of alleles indicates the possible presence of gross deletions involving one or more exons or may indicate the location of the molecular defects in either the noncoding parts of the gene or in the promoter region, which warrants analysis of those regions.

The relationship of early and late menarche with adult body dimensions has been studied on a sample of 147 young adult women drawn from an urban Punjabi population of Chandigarh and Ludhiana. The results indicate that girls with early menarche (age 10 to 11) have significantly smaller skeletal dimensions (both longitudinal and transverse) and more subcutaneous fat than those with average or late menarche. The girls with late menarche have on average more height for weight than early maturers. Results indicate that there is a biological determinant of the observed association between menarcheal age and fatness and adult body size.

Autologous serum therapy is a promising therapy for treatment resistant urticaria. This is useful in developing countries as this is economical option. Minimum instruments like centrifuge, syringe and needles are required for the procedure.

This study showed that majority of TM in north India present before 1 year of age and homozygous 619-bp deletion presents the earliest. The presence of Xmn-1(G)gamma polymorphism delays the presentation, is associated with the IVS 1-1 (G-->T) and shows variable improvement with hydroxyurea therapy. Based on the results of genotyping, reevaluation of patients can improve the outcome in a few patients.
