Este artigo propõe uma contextualização acerca de propostas realizadas em museus e centros de arte, a partir dos anos 1990, principalmente no âmbito europeu, para promover programas experimentais dentro de seus contextos institucionais. Tais propostas surgem em decorrência de ou como resposta a acontecimentos como: a gradual transformação das estruturas museológicas tradicionais em direção à possibilidade de emergência de novos modelos; a internalização das propostas de duas gerações de artistas engajados com a Crítica Institucional, que levaram à constituição de Instituições de Crítica; o surgimento da figura do curador independente; a reação dessas instituições diante da crescente influência do capitalismo globalizado e corporativo sobre a dinâmica das instituições de arte. É abordado, como exemplo de instituição experimental, o caso do basis voor actuele kunst (BAK). Observa-se, ainda, como muitas dessas experiências sofreram alterações como cortes orçamentários, mudanças de direcionamento político e substituição de diretores, o que levou diversos autores a indagar acerca da possibilidade de continuidade dessas experimentações institucionais.
Neste artigo, realiza-se uma contextualização acerca da concepção do Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Barcelona (MACBA), enfatizando-se a gestão de Manuel Borja-Villel (1998-2008) como diretor, em que foram realizadas experimentações institucionais que visaram a aproximar o Museu, a cidade e a comunidade. Em seguida, é analisada a gestão de seu sucessor, Bartomeu Marí (2008-2015), a fim de verificarmos, a respeito da construção de uma “cultura institucional”, a proposição dessas experimentações institucionais no museu. Avalia-se, por um lado, a possibilidade de que a sustentação de proposições desse tipo esteja ancorada em figuras de diretores específicos. De outro, cabe questionarmos se as estruturas internas à instituição poderiam determinar e cercear a autonomia dos diretores em casos de eventuais conflitos de interesses.
Esta dissertação parte da observação de práticas institucionais experimentais que se concentraram principalmente na Europa, a partir dos anos noventa. Tais experimentações buscaram reestruturações institucionais, prezando pelo engajamento do público em suas atividades, além de fazer frente a modelos pautados no entretenimento e no espetáculo, de modo a contrariar tais premissas, e tendo como referência exposições experimentais paradigmáticas realizadas a partir dos anos sessenta, bem como práticas da Crítica Institucional do mesmo período. No entanto, várias dessas instituições experimentais enfrentaram problemas para manter suas atividades, com cortes de financiamento e até mesmo, em alguns casos, o encerramento de suas atividades. Diante disso, tomamos como objeto de estudo o caso do Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Barcelona (MACBA), reconhecendo, em sua história, um período notavelmente marcado por propostas experimentais, sob a direção de Manuel Borja-Villel, a fim de rastrear a continuidade, ou não, de propostas nesse sentido nas gestões seguintes, de Bartomeu Marí (2008-2015) e Ferran Barenblitt (desde 2015), bem como possíveis dificuldades enfrentadas para sua manutenção e desenvolvimento. Avalia-se, por um lado, a possibilidade de que figuras específicas de liderança, no caso os diretores das instituições, são cruciais para a implementação e sustentação das propostas diante dos diversos atores que coexistem dentro das estruturas institucionais, como membros de Conselhos e fundações. Por outro lado, considera-se também o papel desses órgãos na tomada de decisões dentro da instituição, diante dos quais o diretor pode ter sua autonomia limitada.
Diante de recentes episódios tanto de censura e ataque a exposições, como de demissões de diretores de instituições culturais por motivos ideológicos, em escala global, interessa ao presente artigo questionar acerca da efetiva autonomia das instituições para manter seu posicionamento político em tempos de recrudescimento do conservadorismo. Para discutir acerca dessa questão, atentamos para a possibilidade conflitos internos dentro das instituições culturais, advindos de posições contrastantes entre funcionários e os membros dos conselhos diretores dessas instituições, bem como da influência do envolvimento corporativo no campo da cultura, questões que há muito vêm sendo alvo de ações de artistas no contexto da Crítica Institucional. Tomamos como ponto de partida casos recentes ocorridos nos Estados Unidos e no Brasil, levando em consideração os modelos e estruturas das instituições culturais de cada país, e tendo em mente a necessidade desses espaços de exercerem uma função social e de resistência.
Este artigo parte da necessidade de reafirmação da função social dos museus, especialmente no contexto de países como o Brasil, que tem observado o recrudescimento da intolerância e constantes atentados à democracia, uma vez que se acredita na importância da atuação dos museus como espaços de resistência e defesa da diversidade cultural, sexual, de gênero e étnico-racial dos indivíduos, e também na abordagem de temas urgentes a seus contextos sociais, políticos e econômicos. Observaremos as transformações em torno dos objetivos e funções dos museus ao longo da História, e com base nas definições do Conselho Internacional de Museus (ICOM), em direção ao desenvolvimento de propostas que assumem uma função social para o museu, como os museus comunitários, em cujos processos as comunidades estão mais fortemente envolvidas. Acreditamos que muitas instituições possam aprender com os museus comunitários a estreitar laços com as suas comunidades e contribuir para seu desenvolvimento. Atravessado pela pandemia da COVID-19, que escancarou as já existentes contradições estruturais do sistema mundial dominante, o artigo passa também a refletir, diante dos diversos desafios enfrentados pelos museus nesse contexto, acerca da possibilidade de revisão, por parte deles, de suas próprias missões, momento em que, mais do que nunca, a reafirmação de sua função social se faz necessária.
