Celso Castro, professor do Departamento de Sociologia e Política da PUC-Rio, organizador e tradutor desse volume, inicia a apresentação do livro afirmando que é difícil de acreditar que essa seja a primeira coletânea de Franz Boas publicada no Brasil. Considerando-se a vastidão da obra de Boas e a sua imensa importância enquanto um dos "pais-fundadores" da antropologia moderna, uma tradução para o português era mais do que necessária, principalmente porque torna mais viável o uso dos textos do autor nos cursos de graduação (e Castro confessa que organizou o livro pensando principalmente em seus alunos). Na apresentação, Castro inclui uma breve mas bastante completa biografia de Boas, usando como fontes dois especialistas, Douglas Cole e George Stocking Jr. Além disso, justifica a seleção dos artigos e comenta cada um deles. Todos os artigos são originários de Race, Language and Culture, de 1940, uma coletânea que Boas organizou quase no final da vida, contendo 62 textos que ele julgava os mais representativos da sua carreira. Dos cinco artigos, quatro são da parte de "Cultura" em Race, Language and Culture. Isso é positivo, já que são provavelmente os artigos mais usados no ensino de Teoria Antropológica. O primeiro texto é o clássico As Limitações do Método Comparativo em Antropologia Social, de 1896, onde Boas critica o evolucionismo social, com base na defesa da pertinência do método indutivo. Sem impugná-lo diretamente, Boas afirma que a comparação evolucionista entre povos seria possível somente dentro de territórios restritos, por meio de precisos estudos individuais. Além disso, nesse artigo Boas também critica o determinismo geográfico, baseado no argumento de que ele não dá conta de explicar a diversidade que existia * Mestranda em Antropologia Social. entre povos que viviam em condições geográficas semelhantes. Essas são as indagações que basicamente norteiam as quatrocentas páginas da obra do antropólogo americano Gordon Mathews. Esses questionamentos são descontruídos e fragmentados em inúmeros outros a respeito do que significa cultura hoje-tanto para o senso comum como para mundo acadêmico da antropologia-e como as pessoas entendem quem são culturalmente.A principal ferramenta usada por Mathews para problematizar a questão da identidade cultural é o conceito de "supermercado cultural global": como pensar em culturas nacionais quando uma boa parcela da população mundial, diariamente, escolhe aspectos da sua vida nas prateleiras de um supermercado cultural global? As opções de escolha disponíveis a todos são inúmeras: tratando-se de comida, por exemplo, pode-se comer ovos e bacon no café da manhã, lasanha no almoço e sushi no jantar; como entretenimento, pode-se ouvir jazz, samba, reggae e salsa; no campo da religião, podese escolher entre se tornar cristão, budista, sufi ou ateu.A tensão entre pertencer a uma cultura nacional e ser um consumidor do supermercado global é apresentada com a etnografia de três grupos: artistas japoneses tradicionais e contemporâneos; americanos em busca de religião, cristãos e budistas; e intelectuais de Hong Kong à procura de uma identidade após um evento histórico recente, a devolução de Hong Kong à China.Essas etnografias se guiam por indagações aparentemente simples, mas que evocam a dificuldade de se colocar identidades nacionais em categorias estanques: o que no mundo é japonês? (Ou americano? Ou chinês?).No primeiro capítulo, Sobre os Significados de Cultura, Mathews inicia com um panorama geral do conceito de cultura em antropologia e suas inúmeras significações, desde seu aparecimento no século XIX, passando pelos evolucionistas, Franz Boas, Ruth Benedict e Clifford Geertz, até a espécie de mal-estar contemporâneo no uso do conceito por alguns antropólogos. Seu objetivo é fazer um contraponto entre o conceito "clássico" de cultura como "o modo de vida de um povo" e o conceito mais contemporâneo,
Esta pesquisa está sendo desenvolvida no âmbito do Projeto Integrado “Estudo Antropológico de Itinerários Urbanos, Formas de Sociabilidade e Memória Coletiva no Mundo Urbano Contemporâneo” (CNPq). Este projeto dirige o olhar para as múltiplas formas do viver urbano na cidade de Porto Alegre, etnografando a cidade através das vivências dos atores sociais estudados e através das províncias de significados com as quais estes permanentemente negociam seus papéis no cotidiano. Levando-se em consideração quatro pontos de enfoque, escolhidos pela sua presença nas narrativas dos informantes (“Experiências e Espaços”, “Relações”, “Atitudes e Visão de Mundo”, e “Projetos”) e derivados da complexificação crescente do viver urbano, pretende-se, neste artigo, explorar as tramas formadas por estes aspectos conforme foram vivenciados por uma geração, através da aproximação progressiva com os vários planos que compõem a tessitura da vida social da Porto Alegre da ‘virada’ dos anos 80. Experimentando esta maneira de interpretação, pretendo partir de um plano geral – o cenário político porto-alegrense e brasileiro da década de 70, para chegar um aspecto mais particular, relacionado às aspirações, visão de mundo e projetos de alguns atores sociais que vivenciaram a movimentação artístico-cultural da cidade de Porto Alegre nesta época. Para tanto, proponho trabalhar com as narrativas sobre a própria trajetória de cinco atores sociais presentes e atuantes neste cenário. A memória desta geração é a peça-chave destas narrativas, pois através dela se retoma experiências vividas e sentidas por estes atores a mais de duas décadas atrás.2 A própria rede social a qual pertenciam, da qual falarei em breve, não configura-se da mesma maneira nos dias de hoje, pois os compromissos posteriores da vida. Inicio, assim, esta monografia apresentando meu objeto de estudo, os atores sociais do “movimento” Deu Pra Ti Anos 70 de Porto Alegre, para em seguida cruzar os relatos de vida de alguns informantes que dele participaram com seus depoimentos e as interpretações propostas por estes.
