El síndrome nefrótico es una glomerulopatía causada por enfermedades renales que aumentan la permeabilidad de la barrera de filtración glomerular, la enfermedad de cambios mínimos es la causa más asociada con el desarrollo del síndrome nefrótico en pediatría. Las manifestaciones clínicas que caracterizan a este síndrome son: proteinuria en rango nefrótico, hipoalbuminemia, edemas en zonas de declive y alteraciones en el perfil lipídico. El diagnóstico es realizado por hallazgos clínicos y otros estudios entre ellos análisis de orina, proteínas urinarias como pruebas iniciales, niveles de albúmina sérica y en ocasiones alteraciones en el perfil lipídico, en pocos casos la biopsia renal requiere para confirmar el diagnóstico. La mayoría de pacientes responden al tratamiento médico de primera línea con remisión de la enfermedad y control de la sintomatología.
