This article explores paths other than the leading theoretical concepts of competence. To this end, we start by explaining the “conceptual challenge” represented by assumptions of enaction in the description of skill development. Then, after an empirical study conducted with high school students during a physical education sequence (Terré, 2015), competency development is analyzed based on the students’ experience. Explanatory hypotheses are suggested to outline an enactive notion of skill development, the main characteristic of which is to consider the anchoring of skill development – and conjointly the sustainability of knowledge – through stories. By engaging in stories, students’ actions and interpretations take on a temporal depth and they construct “dispositions to act” that build competencies. This analysis continues with a proposal to reverse the generally established relationship between knowledge building and skill development: knowledge built over the course of these episodes would be the product of developing competencies, not the reverse. For the purposes of speculation, several approaches for modifying teaching practices are proposed to encourage student involvement through stories.
