L'enquête pionnière de W. E. B. Du Bois, Les Noirs de Philadelphie : une étude sociale (1899), a inauguré l'analyse sociologique des questions raciales. Aux États-Unis, au moment où il débute son enquête, l'inégalité des conditions d'existence entre groupes raciaux est généralement pensée comme la conséquence de l'inégalité de leurs caractéristiques biologiques respectives supposées. Par un tour de force méthodologique et analytique, Du Bois réfute cette opinion commune en articulant le concept alors central de préjugé racial à celui d'environnement social. Ce faisant, il définit le préjugé racial non pas comme un instinct naturel inné mais comme une attitude sociale construite. Cette perspective novatrice, à la fois psychologique et sociologique, permet à Du Bois d'esquisser les fondements d'une théorie relationnelle du monde social. De ce point de vue, ses conclusions demeurent actuelles pour les sciences sociales, en particulier pour la sociologie et la psychologie sociale, souvent isolées à l'intérieur de champs disciplinaires strictement délimités.
Depuis quelques années, Black Lives Matter a émergé comme un mouvement social de grande ampleur cherchant à exposer et à renverser les différentes formes de violence sociale à l’égard des minorités raciales aux États-Unis. Black Lives Matter semble original à plusieurs titres. D’abord, ce mouvement encore en formation est dirigé par une nouvelle génération d’activistes dont beaucoup – comme les personnes LGBTQ – furent traditionnellement exclu.e.s des mobilisations politiques africaines-américaines. Ensuite, le mouvement n’est pas verticalement structuré mais incorpore diverses organisations dans un réseau horizontal permettant une dissémination de voix nouvelles. Enfin, le mouvement rejette un certain nombre de tactiques traditionnelles pour en explorer de nouvelles afin de rendre visible la crise raciale multiforme travaillant la société américaine aujourd’hui.
Cet article étudie la lutte en faveur de la déségrégation des espaces de loisirs dans la ville de Baltimore entre les années 1930 et les années 1950. Premièrement, il explique pourquoi la déségrégation des loisirs publics représenta un terrain crucial des mobilisations africaines-américaines et des résistances blanches à Baltimore. Deuxièmement, il analyse l’évolution des tactiques politiques africaines-américaines passant d’une attaque indirecte pour une déségrégation graduelle à une attaque directe pour une déségrégation immédiate de l’espace public. Troisièmement, il prend Baltimore comme cas d’étude du « long » Mouvement pour les droits civiques en insistant sur l’importance des loisirs et le rôle des classes moyennes et supérieures noires dans sa formation.
Publié en 1920, après une dizaine d’années de reformulations, « Les âmes du peuple blanc » est l›un des plus remarquable texte de W. E. B. Du Bois, approfondissant les analyses qui l›avaient rendu célèbre avec Les âmes du peuple noir (1903). Dans une langue incisive et insurgée, Du Bois propose une explication lumineuse de son époque. Interprétation historique de l’impérialisme colonial et de la Première Guerre mondiale, proposition politique en faveur de la fierté noire et du panafricanisme, théorisation épistémologique de la clairvoyance minoritaire et de la blanchité. « Les âmes du peuple blanc » est un texte qui dissèque de façon radicale la suprématie blanche comme régime de pouvoir fondé la race.
