Las inundaciones urbanas representan los eventos que mayores impactos producen sobre la población y el medio físico construido en la Región Metropolitana de Buenos Aires (RMBA), las cuales contemplan una dinámica compleja dependiente de la relación entre múltiples variables causales. De manera general, en cuencas urbanas de Argentina, se produce un avance de la urbanización informal sobre cursos de agua lo cual es acompañado por la ausencia en el desarrollo de sistemas de gestión de residuos y servicios públicos adecuados, situación que agrava las consecuencias producidas por eventos de inundación. El desarrollo del trabajo se concentró en la cuenca Sarandí – Santo Domingo ubicada en la RMBA, la cual se encuentra altamente antropizada, presenta eventos de inundaciones recurrentes, condiciones de alta vulnerabilidad social y múltiples problemas ambientales. Esto permitió realizar una caracterización en detalle de la amenaza ante eventos de inundación de diferente magnitud e interrelacionar esta información con la vulnerabilidad presente en la cuenca de estudio. Para ello se procedió al desarrollo, calibración, validación y explotación del modelo hidrológico e hidráulico EPA - SWMM, el cual se complementó con la instalación de instrumental hidrométrico en el territorio para el logro de los objetivos. De esta forma se pudieron obtener niveles y velocidades máximas de agua en calles con su respectiva distribución espacial y temporal ante la ocurrencia de eventos de precipitación extremos extraordinarios y ordinarios. Esta información se cruzó con indicadores de vulnerabilidad con el fin de avanzar en la cuantificación de impactos producidos por eventos de inundación. A su vez, se analizaron los cambios hidrológicos producidos por modificaciones en la urbanización de partidos y expansión de actividades productivas. Se elaboró una metodología para la cuantificación de los impactos producidos por eventos de inundación, lo cual permitió una mejor comprensión de la dinámica de inundaciones urbanas en el territorio y las consecuencias potenciales producidas por eventos extremos extraordinarios de precipitación, resultando una herramienta de suma importancia para la toma de decisiones políticas y el desarrollo de planes de mitigación.
