The aim of the present contribution is to give a review on the recent work concerning Cd-free buffer and window layers in chalcopyrite solar cells using various deposition techniques as well as on their adaptation to chalcopyrite-type absorbers such as Cu(In,Ga)Se 2 , CuInS 2 , or Cu(In,Ga)(S,Se) 2 . The corresponding solar-cell performances, the expected technological problems, and current attempts for their commercialization will be discussed. The most important deposition techniques developed in this paper are chemical bath deposition, atomic layer deposition, ILGAR deposition, evaporation, and spray deposition. These deposition methods were employed essentially for buffers based on the following three materials: In 2 S 3 , ZnS, Zn 1 À x Mg x O.

Significant power conversion efficiency improvements have recently been achieved for thin-film solar cells based on a variety of polycrystalline absorbers, including perovskites, CdTe, and Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS). The passivation of grain boundaries (GBs) through (post-deposition) treatments is a crucial step for this success. For the case of CIGS, the introduction of a potassium fluoride post-deposition treatment (KF-PDT) has boosted their power conversion efficiency to the best performance of all polycrystalline solar cells. Direct and indirect effects of potassium at the interface and interface-near region in the CIGS layer are thought to be responsible for this improvement. Here, we show that also the electronic properties of the GBs are beneficially modified by the KF-PDT. We used Kelvin probe force microscopy to study the effect of the KF-PDT on the CIGS surface by spatially resolved imaging of the surface potential. We find a clear difference for the GB electronic properties: the KF-PDT increases the band bending at GBs by about 70% and results in a narrower distribution of work function values at the GBs. This effect of the KF-PDT on the GB electronic properties is expected to contribute to the improved efficiency values observed for CIGS thin-film solar cells with KF-PDT.

Recent breakthroughs in Cu(In,Ga)Se 2 (CIGS) thin film solar cell energy conversion efficiency are related to the application of a potassium fluoride post-deposition treatment (KF-PDT) to the completed absorber. Using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman scattering, we compare CIGS layers prior and after the KF-PDT in the case of a deterioration and an improvement of the solar cells photovoltaic performance. The purpose is to study and model the modification of the surface in both cases and address some of the required characteristics of the absorber, grown on soda lime glass by 3-stage process, in order to take advantage of the treatment. We show that, in both cases, KF-PDT induces the formation of GaF 3 , which is removed during the subsequent chemical bath deposition of CdS, explaining the Ga depleted absorber surface, already reported in literature. However, the presence or not of an ordered defect compound (ODC), correlated with the third stage duration during the CIGS growth, is shown to be crucial in the modifications of the surface induced by the treatment. When an ODC is present prior the treatment, KF-PDT leads to the formation of a surface layer of In 2 Se 3 containing K, and the photovoltaic performance of completed solar cells are improved. When no ODC is present prior KF-PDT, no trace of K is found at the absorber surface after the treatment, copper (Cu) segregates into detrimental Cu x Se phases, high amount of elemental Se is formed, and the photovoltaic performance are lowered. The role of the ODC during the KF-PDT is finally discussed.

Artificial photosynthesis is a vibrant field of research aiming at converting abundant, low energy molecules such as water, nitrogen or carbon dioxide into fuels or useful chemicals by means of solar energy input. Photo-electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide is an appealing strategy, aiming at reducing the greenhouse gas into valuable products such as carbon monoxide at low or without bias voltage. Yet, in such configuration, there is no catalytic system able to produce carbon monoxide selectively in aqueous media with high activity, and using earth-abundant molecular catalyst. Upon associating a p-type Cu(In,Ga) Se 2 semiconductor with cobalt quaterpyridine complex, we herein report a photocathode complying with the aforementioned requirements. Pure carbon dioxide dissolved in aqueous solution (pH 6.8) is converted to carbon monoxide under visible light illumination with partial current density above 3 mA cm −2 and 97% selectivity, showing good stability over time.

We review the present state-of-the-art within back and front contacts in kesterite thin film solar cells, as well as the current challenges. At the back contact, molybdenum (Mo) is generally used, and thick Mo(S, Se) 2 films of up to several hundred nanometers are seen in record devices, in particular for selenium-rich kesterite. The electrical properties of Mo(S, Se) 2 can vary strongly depending on orientation and indiffusion of elements from the device stack, and there are indications that the back contact properties are less ideal in the sulfide as compared to the selenide case. However, the electronic interface structure of this contact is generally not well-studied and thus poorly understood, and more measurements are needed for a conclusive statement. Transparent back contacts is a relatively new topic attracting attention as crucial component in bifacial and multijunction solar cells. Front illuminated efficiencies of up to 6% have so far been achieved by adding interlayers that are not always fully transparent. For the front contact, a favorable energy level alignment at the kesterite/CdS interface can be confirmed for kesterite absorbers with an intermediate [S]/([S]+[Se]) composition. This agrees with the fact that kesterite absorbers of this composition reach highest efficiencies when CdS buffer layers are employed, while alternative buffer materials with larger band gap, such as Cd 1−x Zn x S or Zn 1−x Sn x O y , result in higher efficiencies than devices with CdS buffers when sulfurrich kesterite absorbers are used. Etching of the kesterite absorber surface, and annealing in air or inert atmosphere before or after buffer layer deposition, has shown strong impact on device performance. Heterojunction annealing to promote interdiffusion was used for the highest performing sulfide kesterite device and air-annealing was reported important for selenium-rich record solar cells. Cu 2 ZnSnS 4 (CZTS) absorbers for solar cell applications was first reported by Ito and Nakazawa [1]. Early results on CZTS device performance were reported by Friedlmeier et al [2], Seol et al [3], and Katagiri et al [4]. Later a group at IBM reached record performances with power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) above 10% for CZTSSe devices in 2010 [5] and the current record PCE of 12.6% in 2013 [6]. In 2018, researchers from DGIST reached the same performance, 12.6%, but for a larger device area [7]. The device structure used for kesterite solar cells was originally copied from that of Cu(In, Ga)Se 2 , (CIGSe) TFSCs, and is formed by sequential deposition, upon a soda lime glass substrate, of a Mo back contact, the absorber, a CdS buffer layer, and a ZnO/ZnO:Al bi-layer window (i.e. transparent top contact). This structure, schematically shown for CZTSSe in figure 1, is not necessarily ideal for kesterite solar cells, and extensive work has been invested into studies of alternative backand front contacts and related deposition processes.
