RESUMEN Este artículo estudia lo relativo al descubrimiento y la circulación de los diversos manuscritos de la Historia de la Conquista del Paraguay, Río de la Plata y Tucumán del jesuita Pedro Lozano, su proceso de edición y sus primeras lecturas a nivel local y regional. Dicho examen pretende revelar las características asociadas a las prácticas coleccionistas y bibliófilas de la intelectualidad americana durante la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, a la vez que descubrir dentro de ellas el rol protagónico del diplomático e historiador uruguayo Andrés Lamas como agente facilitador para la circulación de materiales históricos y figura decisiva en la publicidad del texto de Lozano. Así, el trabajo exhibe el complejo funcionamiento de un mercado coleccionista que comprende un denso entramado relacional de alcance transnacional, orientado a la conservación y puesta en valor de la documentación sobre el pasado americano para salvarla y ofrecerla a las futuras generaciones de historiadores para la reescritura de la historia.
Andrés Lamas fue designado, mediante decreto gubernamental, para escribir la Historia de la República Oriental del Uruguay en 1849. El Estado le facilitó los recursos económicos y logísticos necesarios. Esto, sumado a su vasta experiencia diplomática y al despliegue de vínculos intelectuales a escala transnacional, le posibilitó el acceso a numerosas fuentes documentales y material bibliográfico con los que producir la obra. Sin embargo, al momento de su muerte en 1891 —cuarenta años después de su nombramiento y encargo— la obra se hallaba inacabada y no existían borradores que anticiparan su pronta culminación. A partir de ello, el objetivo de este artículo es analizar el proceso de confección de la Historia, lo que llevará a reconocer las características de la práctica histórica en el siglo XIX y permitirá advertir el protagonismo de Lamas en la conformación del campo historiográfico rioplatense. De este modo, se pretende evidenciar que tras el fracaso del proyecto subsistía la necesidad, en una fracción de las élites letradas decimonónicas, de ejecutar trabajos preparatorios que abonaran el terreno para la labor histórica de las siguientes generaciones de historiadores.
Este artículo examina las características del proceso de elaboración y circulación de la Revista del Río de la Plata, periódico publicado en Buenos Aires por los intelectuales Juan María Gutiérrez, Vicente Fidel López y Andrés Lamas. Mediante el análisis del soporte y de la correspondencia intercambiada entre sus responsables, se busca determinar su lugar particular dentro del espacio publicitario argentino durante la década de 1870 y demostrar la forma en que accionó en el campo editorial como plataforma eficaz para salvaguardar (reunir y visibilizar) el acervo documental del continente —en tensión y diálogo con otros proyectos privados y estatales— y como espacio coleccionista y bibliófilo alrededor del cual se conformó un extenso entramado colaborativo transnacional que facilitó la creación y reescritura de distintos relatos histórico-literarios sobre el pasado argentino y americano por parte de las élites letradas.
