ZusammenfassungDemografische Entwicklungen haben in den letzten Jahren zu einer Veränderung der Schulstruktur beigetragen. In diesem Beitrag stellen wir uns die Frage, ob Veränderungen der Schülerzahlen auch einen Einfluss auf die individuellen Bildungschancen ausüben. Hierzu untersuchen wir mit Hilfe von Daten des Statistischen Bundesamts den Einfluss demografischer Schwankungen auf die individuellen Chancen, ein Gymnasium zu besuchen und dort zu verbleiben. Unsere Analyseeinheiten sind die deutschen Bundesländer von 1949 bis 2012 und die Kreise Deutschlands von 1995 bis 2012. In Fixed-Effects-Modellen zeigen wir, dass bei rückläufigen Schülerzahlen die Chancen auf einen Übergang zum Gymnasium und den dortigen Verbleib steigen. Als zugrundeliegende Mechanismen vermuten wir erstens eine günstige Schüler-Lehrer-Relation und zweitens das kommunale Interesse am Selbsterhalt der Gymnasien in Zeiten demografischer Schrumpfung.
