This study examines Italian-American immigrant leaders through the stereotyped portrayal of Italian-American leaders in film. The most influential film for representing Italian-American leadership is Francis Ford Coppola's film The Godfather. We first review the emergence of Italian immigrant leadership in the United States and then briefly summarize typical patterns in the cinematic portrayal of Italian-Americans, followed by an in-depth examination of The Godfather's depiction of pragmatic and ethical leadership issues against the background of Italian-American history, drawing connections to theories and conceptualizations of leadership.
This paper examines leadership as a theme in works of visual art. It begins by identifying some key theoretical issues that arise in the artistic depiction of leadership, especially in comparison to the depiction of leadership through the verbal medium of literature. The paper builds on some earlier studies of the depiction of leadership in art by describing the challenges, limitations, and advantages of studying that depiction from the dual perspectives of art history and of leadership studies, and links the above issues to the analysis of leadership in specific works of art.
