Recently, the demand for small grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) systems has been rapidly increasing; this is due to the reduction in the costs of grid-connected storage systems as compared to those of the stand-alone ones. Notably, the performance of the solar tracking system is not only depending on the types but also the region that they are set up and used. To understand how solar tracking systems work globally, we need to know their performance in each country and even the different parts of a country. In this study, two grid-connected PV systems with 250 W solar modules were used to investigate the efficient improvement of a single-axis sun tracking system in Central Vietnam. First, a mechanical tracking device with a linear actuator and a controller was designed and then its performance was comprehensively investigated with a grid-connected PV system. In addition to evaluating the energy gain by the tracking system, this study also considered the energy consumption of the linear actuator with its controller and a small grid-connected PV system; this has generally been omitted in previous works. Experimental results indicate that the total energy consumption of the tracking system was approximately 2–8% of the energy generated by the grid-connected PV system. The maximum overall energy generation was confirmed to have increased by up to 30.3% on a sunny day upon using the proposed tracking system; further, the net energy gain by using the sun tracker was ascertained to be 15.2% in average weather conditions. Based on the success of this work, we will keep experimenting with other parts of Vietnam. Also, we will collaborate with colleagues in other countries to create a guideline for understanding and using the solar tracker regionally and globally.
Mine drainage pump is the most important load in mining which requires high reliabilitywhen operating. Currently, the power supply of a mine drainage pump is connected to the same powerline with many nonlinear loads, and is equipped with power electronic converters, which makes thepower supply nonsinusoidal. During the working process of a mine drainage pump, the load-carryingfactor often changes, and many types of failures occur, among which single-phase voltage loss is themost common problem. In the case of a nonsinusoidal power supply, if a single-phase voltage lossoccurs in different load modes, it will greatly affect the working mode of the mine drainage pumpleading to influences on the working efficiency, the life of the pump, and sometimes it is necessary torecalculate the protection parameters. This paper studies the influence of single-phase voltage loss andload carrying mode on the working mode of mine drainage pump motor in case the of nonsinusoidalpower supply. Research results show that, in the case of nonsinusoidal power supplied with single-phasevoltage loss, copper losses in the rotor and stator circuits increase with increases in voltage totalharmonic distortion (THD) and load-carrying factor, 5th order reverse harmonic increases copper loss inasynchronous motor the most, and higher harmonic components have less effect on copper loss in themotor. At the same time, the speed ripple decreases with the increase of the motor load factor anddecreases in the presence of the 5th order negative sequence harmonic, and increases significantly in thepresence of the 7th order positive sequence harmonic. 5th order negative sequence harmonic increases, the torque ripple increases, while the 7th order positive sequence harmonic reduces the torque ripple inthe case of single-phase voltage loss. The results of the paper will help improve the operationalefficiency of the mine drainage pump in Vietnam's mines.
Explosion-proof transformers 6/1.2 kV is important electrical equipment responsible forsupplying electricity in underground mine electrical networks. A failure of this transformer will cause aninterruption in the power supply and loss of safety in underground mining. Usually, explosion-prooftransformers in underground mine electrical networks are designed and manufactured to work with idealparameters such as sinusoidal currents, and the network structure is symmetrical. However, today inunderground mine electric networks, many power electronics are connected to the network, such asinverters and soft starters. As a result, a current flowing through the transformer is non-sinusoidal,overloading the transformer even by working with the design specifications. This paper studies theinfluence of harmonics on the working efficiency of a 6/1.2 kV transformer in a pit mine. Research resultssuggest reasonable solutions for transformer operation to ensure longevity and not cause damage to thetransformer.
Currently, with government support, the use of small-scale grid-connected photovoltaic (GCPV) systems for households is growing in Vietnam. The installation of a rooftop GCPV system provides many benefits to households, such as lower monthly electricity bills, heat reduction for the building, and income generation for households. However, the issue of the payback period necessitates more technical calculations. The primary goal of this study was to develop a computational model and investigate the effect of electrical energy consumption on the payback period of rooftop GCPV systems. A case study was used in this study to create a model of a rooftop GCPV system for households in north-central Vietnam under feed-in tariff (FiT) schemes. The results show that the investment rate and electrical energy consumption of the installed household have a strong influence on the payback period of the GCPV system. In the case of the lowest investment rate of 15 million VND/kWp, the fastest payback period is 40 months for households consuming all of the generating energy of the GCPV system, and the longest payback period is 104 months for households that do not use electricity, implying that all of the generating energy of the GCPV system is connected and sold to the distribution grid. The research findings will actively assist in calculating the installed capacity suitable for households in order to have the most suitable payback period while also assisting policymakers in the future in setting a reasonable rate of feed-in tariff for rooftop GCPV systems.
