The purpose of this study was to identify the factors associated with the delay in seeking first antenatal care (ANC) service among pregnant women at Katutura state hospital, Khomas region. A qualitative, explorative and descriptive design was used to gain the data from pregnant women started first antenatal care later than twelve weeks of gestation. Data was collected through in-depth interview among pregnant women during their first visit at Katutura state hospital antenatal clinic, Khomas region. The data analysis was done in line with thematic analysis and themes and sub-themes were identified. The study findings concluded that most pregnant women attend their first ANC later than twelve weeks gestation because of work commitment, long distance to health facilities, and lack of knowledge about the important of starting ANC in first trimester of pregnancy. The study recommends the establishment and implementation of a community based health education programs about the antenatal care services in order to create awareness and knowledge in the community about the importance of starting antenatal care services during the first trimester of pregnancy.
The purpose of this study was to assess and explore the contributing factors of non-adherence among male patients on Antiretroviral therapy (ART) treatment at Katutura Health Centre, Khomas Region. The objectives of this study were to determine and describe the factors contributing to non-adherence of ART treatment among male patients at Katutura Health Centre .Data were collected using the structured questionnaires. A purposive sampling technique was used. The collected data were entered in data sets and analyzed using Statistical (SPSS) version 23.0 software to describe the phenomena and to assess the magnitude of ART non-adherence among male patients. The study concluded that non-adherence of ART treatment among male patients in Katutura Health Centre, Khomas region is caused by different factors, such as, lack of food among patients on ART treatment, lack of transportation to the health facility for treatment and alcohol abuse. Therefore practical preventative interventions such as community education program should be developed and implemented to improve and ensure ART adherence.
Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) plays a major role in providing care for premature neonates, sick neonates or neonates require surgery very soon following delivery. The experience of being a parent of a baby in NICU is more stressful especially if there is a little support or no support rendered from the nursing staff. Parents need support from the nursing staff to gain knowledge and understanding about the neonate’s illness, treatment measures and hospital rules. However, no studies about this issue have been conducted in Namibia. The aim of this study was to investigate the perception of parents related to the nursing support rendered by nurses to parents whose neonates were admitted to NICU at a state hospital in Windhoek, Namibia. A quantitative, cross sectional survey was used to identify and describe parents’ perceptions related to the nursing support rendered by nurses to parents whose neonates were admitted to NICU. The study results indicated that the majority of the participants perceived that they got the good support from the nurses. However, not all parents received needed support from nurses which could increases their stress level. The findings of this study could be used to improve the parents support to reduce stress among parents and neonates and to promote positive coping with regard to the stressful situation of newborns hospitalization.
Globally, the construction industry is regarded as a very dangerous industry due to the labour-intensive nature of the work resulting into a high rate of occupational accidents, injuries, diseases and fatalities. In Namibia, the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) status of workers in construction industries remains a challenge primarily due to the dearth of studies that investigate the health and safety of workers. The objectives of this study were to investigate the status of occupational health and safety in the construction industry in Windhoek, Namibia, with a view to recommend interventions that would improve occupational health and safety of workers in the targeted sector. A quantitative, descriptive study design was conducted among 549 participants from 13 construction sites that were operating at the time of conducting the study. Data were collected by means of an interviewer led questionnaire. SPSS version 23 was used to analyse data. The study identified a number of different approaches to be provided on construction industry for OHS improvement such as OHS programme implementation, training of workers on OHS aspects, provision of medical services to construction workers, adequate provision of welfare facilities, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) provision. The study has proven that there is a need to improve the OHS in the construction industry to prevent occupational accidents, injuries, fatalities and diseases. The practical guidelines were developed which could be useful if implemented in construction sites to improve the OHS in the construction industry.
Globally, about 75 million women have undergone abortions which is either induced or spontaneous and require post abortion care (PAC). Out of the 75 million abortions, 44 million are induced, while 31 million are miscarriages which occur spontaneously. Furthermore, half of the induced abortions are performed by unskilled people in a non-hygienic environment which make them unsafe and dangerous to the women. The World Health Organization recommends that all women who had abortion should receive PAC to prevent ill health and deaths related to complications of abortions. However, in Namibia, the status of PAC is unknown as there is no study conducted in this regard. Moreover, PAC is only conducted by medical doctors in the district hospitals and no nurses or midwives are trained on PAC services. A mini literature review was conducted on PAC globally and in Namibia.
