Global interest in sugarcane has increased significantly in recent years due to its economic impact on sustainable energy production. Sugarcane breeding and better agronomic practices have contributed to a huge increase in sugarcane yield in the last 30 years. Additional increases in sugarcane yield are expected to result from the use of biotechnology tools in the near future. Genetically modified (GM) sugarcane that incorporates genes to increase resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses could play a major role in achieving this goal. However, to bring GM sugarcane to the market, it is necessary to follow a regulatory process that will evaluate the environmental and health impacts of this crop. The regulatory review process is usually accomplished through a comparison of the biology and composition of the GM cultivar and a non-GM counterpart. This review intends to provide information on non-GM sugarcane biology, genetics, breeding, agronomic management, processing, products and byproducts, as well as the current technologies used to develop GM sugarcane, with the aim of assisting regulators in the decision-making process regarding the commercial release of GM sugarcane cultivars.
The chestnut moth is one of the principal pests on Terceira Island affecting the quality of all chestnut production. Investigation work developed by the Interfruta II Project (a project of interregional cooperation among the three Atlantic regions: Azores, Madeira and Canaries) aims at increasing interest in fruit and the vineyard production in the three partner regions. The chestnut moth (Cydia splendana Hubner) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) is the only specie responsible for chestnut fruit damage. The monitoring of this pest using Delta traps with sex pheromone revealed the adult abundance during the season. The higher activity period was between July and October, the months when the chestnut harvest begins.A map of Terceira Island using a GPS and ArcGis 8.0 software was made showing the locality of all the chestnut production areas studied. In the evaluated orchards, fruit damage reached its maximum of 38% at Terra Chã, 218 m of altitude and a southern exposure, and a minimum of 0% damage at Biscoitos, at about the same altitude but with a northern exposure. In both cases, the percentages of infestation were achieved by analyzing a sample of 2.500 chestnuts for each parcel of land.
An. Soc. Entomol. Brasil 29(1): 79-84 (2000) Effects of Sugarcane Burning on Larval and Egg Parasitoids of Diatraea saccharalis (Fabr.) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae)ABSTRACT -To evaluate the effects of pre-and post-harvest burning on larval and egg parasitoids of Diatraea saccharalis (Fabr.) on sugarcane two harvesting systems were studied for two consecutive seasons (92/93 and 93/94), i.e., half of the area was burned (CQ), whereas the other half was not burned before mechanical harvesting(CC). In CQ, all trash remaining in the field after harvesting was also burned. After the 92/93 harvesting, and for two years, larvae of D. saccharalis were collected from both areas with intervals of three months. They were maintained in the laboratory on artificial diet for 15 days, to estimate the parasitism rates. During the same period, evaluations of parasitism on D. saccharalis eggs were made monthly on egg masses, obtained from caged pairs, in the field. These eggs remained on the leaves for a week. The medium larval parasitisms of D. saccharalis, during two years of observations, were 40 and 19.7 % for CC and CQ, while the egg parasitisms were 20.5 and 13.4 % for CC and CQ, respectively. We concluded that pre-and post-harvesting burning of sugarcane affects negatively the population of larval parasitoids of D. saccharalis [Metagonistylum minense Townsend, Paratheresia claripalpis Wulp and Cotesia flavipes (Cameron), especially the last one], as well as its egg parasitoids (Trichogramma spp.).KEY WORDS: Insecta, parasitoids, sugarcane borer.RESUMO -Para avaliar os efeitos da queima do canavial na pré e pós-colheita sobre os parasitóides de larvas e de ovos de Diatraea saccharalis (Fabr.), um canavial de 2 o corte, com área de 15 ha, foi submetido, por dois anos consecutivos (92/93 e 93/94), a dois sistemas de colheita: metade da área foi queimada (CQ), enquanto que a outra metade não foi queimada antes da colheita mecanizada(CC).
