Este estudo teve o objetivo de analisar a moeda social como alternativa econômica regional considerando o seu potencial, na qualidade de tecnologia social, para o desenvolvimento local, além de atuar como viabilizadora e promotora do protagonismo, autonomia, emancipação, gestão democrática e empoderamento dos sujeitos e das comunidades frente aos desafios e tensões econômico-comerciais enfrentadas por determinadas comunidades nas relações econômicas tradicionais e convencionais. Realizou-se um resgate bibliográfico histórico-conceitual na literatura especializada, seguida de uma metodologia descritiva e levantamento da produção científica, que abordou os aspectos e estruturas que compõem a moeda social, suas particularidades e utilizações. Logo após, procedeu-se com um estudo de caso sobre a moeda social de Palma, considerada a primeira moeda social do Brasil, criada e utilizada pelo Conjunto Palmeiras, bairro periférico da cidade de Fortaleza-CE, de modo a compreender as particularidades da apropriação e utilização da moeda no mundo real. Como resultados, identificou-se: a) a necessidade de uma regulamentação das moedas sociais por parte do Estado brasileiro; b) os impactos econômicos positivos para a comunidade usuária da moeda; c) um paradoxo entre a legitimidade e o desuso da moeda.
