It gives examples of three teaching units of different levels of education that illustrate these elements and their contributions to the learning process. In these teaching units predominate investigation and exploration task teaching that promotes the active involvement of students in their learning. These units also favor working with different types of representations, and the students use their own representations, and progress from there to more formal representations. The structure of classes, with moments of presentation of the task, studentsautonomous work and collective discussion and synthesis also enhances the involvement of students in their learning and the development of various types of discourse in the classroom.
Abstract. In this chapter we show that mathematical explorations may be integrated into the core of the daily classroom mathematics activities instead of just being a peripheral activity that is carried out occasionally. Based on two episodes, one on the initial learning of the rational number at grade 5 and the other on the learning of algebraic language at grade 7, we show how teachers may invite students to get involved and interpret such tasks, how they may provide students with significant moments of autonomous work and lead widely participated collective discussions. Thus, we argue that these tasks provide a classroom setting with innovative features in relation to conventional education based on the exposition of concepts and procedures, presentation of examples and practice of exercises and with much more positive results regarding learning.
Collaboration between teachers is essential for professional development. This work presents two collaborative teacher cycles of inquiry, with the aim of characterizing the dynamics between four higher education teachers involved in a collaborative experience related to the creation, implementation, and evaluation of interdisciplinary inquiry learning spaces (ILS). Written communications between the participants, field notes, the ILS produced, ILS assessment rubrics, and meetings summary were used as data sources. Initially, teachers met to organize the interdisciplinary work, and two subteams were formed, each one with one math teacher and one science teacher. Collaborative work is evident in each subteam and between both teams on dialogue, decision making, action, and evaluation components. The interdisciplinary collaboration had a strong focus on mathematical and science content knowledge as well as pedagogical content knowledge of the ILS. Furthermore, it promoted the reflection on teachers' own practice and their effects on student learning.
