Este artículo de investigación define la actividad legal como el conjunto de recursos de capital y trabajo usados para producir, interpretar, aplicar y hacer cumplir toda clase de normas jurídicas, y mide tal actividad a través de estadísticas sobre abogados y litigios en Colombia con el fin de mostrar cómo un exceso en ambas variables puede ser económicamente perjudicial; bosqueja, además, algunas propuestas para mejorar la situación actual. Para tal propósito, el texto, primero, repasa las principales teorías sobre los efectos económicos de la actividad legal, para luego aplicar estas a las particularidades del mercado legal colombiano.
