-(Comparative anatomy of the leaves of Piper lepturum (Kunth) C.DC. var. lepturum and Piper lepturum var. angustifolium (C.DC.) Yunck.). This study showed anatomical differences related to Piper lepturum var. lepturum and P. lepturum var. angustifolium species, sometimes considered varieties and in other cases synonyms. For histological analysis, fully expanded leaves were collected and for analysis by scanning electron microscope (SEM), fragments from the midrib were fixed on both leaf surfaces. The two species revealed differences in plant anatomy and it was observed that the stem of P. lepturum var. lepturum showed persistent wings and papillary epidermal cells, and these characters are absent in P. lepturum var. angustifolium. There was also the presence of raphides only in the lamina leaf and petiole of P. lepturum var. angustifolium, differentiating the two species. Recent studies have shown the importance of plant anatomy with species where there are issues related to taxonomic delimitation.
Palavras-chave: anatomia foliar, fl ora, Piperaceae, taxonomia ABSTRACT -Comparative morphoanatomy of Piper arboreum Aubl. var. arboreum and Piper tuberculatum Jacq. var. tuberculatum leaves. Anatomical descriptions of Piper arboreum Aubl. var. arboreum and P. tuberculatum Jacq. var. tuberculatum that are found in Dense Rainforest in Tijuca are presented in this study. The material was examined according with the usual anatomical techniques. Important diff erences between the taxa were observed. In P. arboreum the sheath is furrowed and contained conspicuous intercellular spaces, the leaf blade contains biestratifi ed hypodermis, unistratifi ed palisade parenchyma, and a concave-convex midrib. P. tuberculatum presents circinate sheath with small intercellular spaces, the leaf blade has unistratifi ed hypodermis, biestratifi ed palisade parenchyma and a convex midrib. The anatomical analysis corroborate the delimitation of the two taxa as distinct.
