Los últimos 5 años, el SNI ecuatoriano ha venido siendo operado bajo condiciones cada vez más críticas, debido a los siguientes factores: falta de cumplimiento de los planes de expansión de la transmisión y generación, altas tasas de incremento del consumo eléctrico en áreas densamente pobladas, nuevos patrones de cargabilidad del sistema debido a la incorporación de interconexiones internacionales, etc.
Las severas condiciones de operación pueden resultar en un comportamiento caracterizado por lentas caídas de voltaje, que bajo ciertas condiciones pueden llegar a producir un colapso. Un problema asociado con la estabilidad de voltaje es mantener perfiles de voltaje viables, es decir niveles de voltaje que permanezcan en un rango especificado cercano al valor nominal (usualmente dentro de la banda del ±5% del valor nominal) cuando las condiciones del sistema y de la carga cambian.
En este trabajo se presenta una descripción de las herramientas matemáticas comúnmente usadas para el análisis de estabilidad de voltaje, y su aplicación en un estudio dirigido al SNI ecuatoriano, presentándose como resultado una evaluación de estabilidad y seguridad de voltaje de dicho sistema.
