OBJETIVO: Medir a prevalência e avaliar os fatores de risco para anemia. MÉTODOS: Estudo transversal de base populacional, realizado em área urbana do Município de Criciúma (SC), Sul do Brasil. A população estudada foi constituída de uma amostra probabilística de 476 crianças menores de 3 anos. Para investigação da associação entre anemia e os fatores de risco. A coleta de dados foi feita através de questionário pré-codificado, aplicado às mães ou responsáveis pela criança, sendo a dosagem de hemoglobina feita com sangue periférico e a leitura imediata em hemoglobinômetro portátil. RESULTADOS: A prevalência de anemia encontrada na amostra foi de 60,4% pelo critério Brault-Dubuc e de 54% pelo critério da OMS. A prevalência de anemia aumenta com a idade até os 18 meses, diminuindo após essa faixa etária, sendo menos prevalente com o aumento da escolaridade do pai e da renda familiar total. Entretanto, mesmo entre os 25% com maior renda foi constatado que mais de 40% das crianças estão anêmicas. Na análise multivariada hierarquizada, permaneceram significativas apenas as variáveis de idade da criança, renda familiar e aglomeração. Não se mostraram como fatores de risco para a anemia os antecedentes de saúde reprodutiva, a utilização dos serviços de saúde, peso ao nascer, aleitamento materno, antropometria e morbidade. CONCLUSÕES: O estudo evidencia a força da desigualdade social na anemia, sendo que o risco que ela representa para a saúde e desenvolvimento intelectual das crianças exige ações imediatas.
