Recentemente as autoridades científicas brasileiras vêm demonstrando grande preocução relacionada com a exploração da floresta amazônica, salientando os danos que esta iniciativa possa trazer ao país, principalmente em se tratando do campo eco lógico.As repercussões do ponto de vista de Saú-de Pública constituem, até o presente, um aspecto pouco abordado da questão . Sabe-se entretanto, que o elemento, hu mano, presente e participante do processo de desmatamentos da Amazônia, poderá constituir-se em um sério problema médico-sanitário ao adquirir e elevar o número de casos de endemias tropicais como a Malária, a Febre Amareia e, particularmente a Leishmaniose Tegumentar Americana, já existentes nesta região.A Le1shmaniose Tegumentar Americana (LTA) é urna doença de evo lução crônica -algumas vezes acarretando lesões mutilantes -provocada por protozoários do gênero Leishmania. Os reservatórios naturais dessa protozoose são principalmente roedores que habitam as florestas tropicais, sendo a mo lés-tia transmitida ao homem através de insetos da família Psychodidae, conhecidos como flebótomos . Quando da ocorrência de um desmatamento, a população de roedores migra para outras áreas em busca de novos abrigos naturais e, conseqüentemente, a fauna flebotômica, que antes realizava sua hematofagia nesses pequenos mamíferos, procura suprir suas necessidades alimentares sugando o homem que vai fixar-se nestas áreas desmatadas produzindo grandes epidemias da doença .A história epidemiológica da l TA, no Brasil, demonstra que os surtos epidêmicos dessa doença tropical estão intimamente relacionados aos desmatamentos de f lorestas . ,
