Skin is a huge organ which plays great role as a multifunctional barrier between the body and environment. It maintains body homeostasis through preventing water loss, governing body temperature, and protecting against pathogenic microorganisms and toxic substances. In this chapter, different functions of skin have been summarized.
Hair develops from invagination of the epidermis and covers the whole body with the exception of the lips, palms, soles, nipples, tip of penis, and inner lips of vulva. It plays important role in maintaining self-esteem, normal social interaction, and insulation against detrimental environmental factors. In this chapter, the disorders affecting hair structure and hair-bearing skin are described.
