The cations of biometals in biological systems easily interact with various moieties of organic and inorganic biomolecules, either as natural constituents or after introduction into the body via O-, N-and S-donor atoms. Study of the interaction between M(II) biometal-O-donor ligand (drug) is of interest for various reasons: more evenly dosing of medicine and biodistribution of medicine; monitoring of its pharmacokinetics including excretion; reduction of unwanted effects of the medicine; greater antimicrobial activity; synergistic effect of the metal and medicine; and improved anti-ulcerous, antitumor and anti-bacterial activity. This paper offers an overview of the literature of published research on coordination between biometals and anti-inflammatory drugs of the acid type. Fibrin sealant is an effective haemostatic agent. The results obtained in our study show that the administration of fibrin sealant in patients receiving anticoagulant treatment eliminates postoperative haematomas after pacemaker implantation.

The ability of a biosorbent based on a chemically modified Lagenaria vulgaris shell for CuII ion removal from aqueous solution was studied in batch conditions. The biosorbent was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and the effect of relevant parameters such as contact time, pH, biomass dosage, and initial metal ion concentration was evaluated. The sorption process was found to be fast, attaining equilibrium within 40 min, and results were found to be best fitted by a pseudo-second order kinetic model. Experimental data showed that the biosorption is highly pH dependent, and the optimal pH was 5.0. Results were analyzed in terms of the following adsorption isotherms: Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Flory–Huggins, by a linear regression method. The CuII biosorption followed the Langmuir isotherm model (r2 = 0.998) with the maximum sorption capacity of 14.95 mg g–1. The methyl-sulfonated Lagenaria vulgaris biomass investigated in this study exhibited a high potential for the removal of CuII from aqueous solution.

Increased galectin-3 plasma concentration has been linked to an unfavorable outcome in patients with heart failure or atrial fibrillation (AF). There are no published data about the prognostic utility of galectin-3 and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) for long-term clinical outcome in the Non-ST elevation acute myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) patients with preexisting AF. Thirty-two patients with the first acute NSTEMI and preexisting AF and 22 patients without preexisting AF, were prospectively followed for fifteen months. Patients with AF had significantly higher galectin-3 plasma levels (p < 0.05) and hs-CRP concentration (p < 0.01), compared with patients without AF. Galectin-3 plasma concentration was not a significant covariate of the composite outcomes (p = 0.913). Patients with high hs-CRP (above 4.55 mg/L) showed 2.5 times increased risk (p < 0.05) of the composite outcome occurrence (p < 0.05). Besides, three-vessel coronary artery disease, creatinine serum level, and creatinine clearance were significant covariates (p < 0.05; p < 0.05; p < 0.01) of the composite outcome, respectively. Creatinine clearance, solely, has been shown to be an independent predictor of unfavorable prognosis after a 15-month follow-up. Galectin-3 and hs-CRP plasma levels were elevated in NSTEMI patients with AF, but with differential predictive value for an unfavorable clinical outcome. Only hs-CRP was associated with increased risk of composite outcome occurrence.

Heavy metal pollution is a serious environmental and health problem. The negative effects of heavy metals that can enter human body can be reduced by the addition of some supplements. In this study, the effects of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and copper (Cu) on the hematological parameters in Wistar rats in the absence and presence of lipoic acid and glutathione were analyzed. Pb, Cd and Cu intoxication significantly affected the hematological parameters of treated animals. The main effects in the case of Pb and Cd intoxication were decreased values of erythrocytes, hemoglobin and hematocrit (up to 30% and 20% for these two metals, respectively) compared with the control group. Cu intoxication caused decrease in hematocrit, thrombocytes, mean cell volume values (c.a. 15%) and slight decrease in the erythrocyte number, while the value of hemoglobin increased (c.a. 7%). The treatment with lipoic acid and glutathione reduced the toxic effects of these metals in all cases.
