Dans la steppe syrienne, à l’est de Hama, a été découvert un très long mur de plus de 220 km de long, dessinant un arc de cercle tourné vers l’est. Construit en pierres sèches avec des matériaux locaux, large en moyenne de 0,8 à 1,1 m et d’une hauteur qui ne devait pas dépasser 1 m ou 1,5 m, il sépare les terres potentiellement exploitables par les sédentaires de celles dévolues principalement au pastoralisme itinérant. Considéré comme remontant à l’âge du Bronze ancien IV, il s’agirait d’un ouvrage limitatif, et non d’un ouvrage défensif, marquant la « frontière » orientale d’un des royaumes – Hama, Ebla ? – du Croissant fertile à la fi n du IIIe millénaire. Nous aurions donc là la plus ancienne matérialisation d’une limite de territoire qui soit connue à ce jour.

La mission de prospection géoarchéologique des «Marges arides de Syrie du Nord » a découvert plus d’un millier de sites qui apportent un éclairage nouveau à la connaissance des régions steppiques pour toutes les périodes de l’histoire de la Syrie et du Proche-Orient. Cet article évoque la période de l’âge du Bronze moyen, qui voit une accentuation du caractère défensif des sites et, surtout, de la protection du territoire. De Salamya à Qinnasrīn, des forteresses, des fortins et des tours, pour la plupart inconnus, s’organisent en un réseau de fortifications hiérarchisées qui longent le relief dominant la steppe. Cet article décrit ce réseau, présente les relevés de chaque type de construction et avance une hypothèse quant à sa fonction première : la protection des terres les plus attractives en terme de mise en valeur agricole.
-Le site archéologique de ʿAïn Jawal, localisé dans la région d'El Kowm en Syrie centrale, s'organise autour d'un puits artésien situé au fond d'une doline. Depuis l'abandon de son exploitation, la doline a été comblée par des apports éoliens. En 2010 et 2011, des fouilles archéologiques ont été menées sur ce site. Des occupations du Paléolithique inférieur au Néolithique, ainsi que des vestiges appartenant aux périodes romaine et islamique ont été mis au jour. Des occupations néolithiques PPNB ont été identifiées dans les trois secteurs A, B et D du site. Une structure de combustion témoigne d'activités domestiques à cette période, soit entre 8500-5500 av. J.-C. Les industries lithiques du PPNB sont composées en majorité de produits laminaires. Les fouilles ont également livré un bouchon en travertin et des restes fauniques dominés par les équidés dont un amas d'ossements identifié dans le secteur D. L'étude du site de ʿAïn Jawal s'intègre pleinement aux problématiques actuelles sur la nature des zones arides et les modes de leur occupation.
