The socially lived subjective experience and the body image developed in early childhood are aspects that contribute to the perception of one's own body. The act of eating goes beyond its historical and cultural meaning and passes through unconscious processes. The aim was to investigate the meaning of eating and the body perception of 27 women who were interested in participating of the Na Medida multidisciplinary program, residents of the north of Paraná State (Brazil). A semi-structured questionnaire was used for data collection, which was analyzed from the thematic-categorical content using the reference of psychoanalysis, considering the social context. The results demonstrated that eating, in addition to meaning the preservation of the species, is associated with the unconscious processes that seek satisfaction. The women felt dissatisfi ed with their own bodies and attempted to overcome the fault by investing in the body, (re)signifying it and trying to create an idealized image under the gaze of the Other.Keywords: Body image, perception, eating, psychoanalysis. As mulheres sentiam-se insatisfeitas com seu próprio corpo e verifi cou-se a tentativa de suprir a falta investindo no corpo, (re)signifi cando-o e tentando criar uma imagem idealizada sob o olhar do Outro.
