Resumo: Objetivou-se caracterizar o sistema de produção e avaliar o perfil dos produtores de plantas ornamentais tropicais da região de Benfica, município de Benevides -PA, assim como identificar os entraves do sistema de produção e da comercialização. Foi aplicado um questionário contendo perguntas fechadas e abertas e dividido em duas partes: caracterização da unidade de produção e perfil do produtor. As análises foram feitas levando-se em consideração as respostas contidas nos questionários, cujos resultados foram tabelados e comparados por meio de análise descritiva. As principais plantas ornamentais cultivadas na comunidade são as tropicais com destaque paras as helicônias, bastão-do-imperador, shampoo, alpínias, antúrios além de folhosas e envasadas. Em todas as propriedades avaliadas houve registro de plantas tropicais e, em apenas uma, as tropicais não representavam o principal produto comercializado, tendo como destaque a produção de plantas envasadas. Todos os produtores são proprietários da terra e estão na atividade a um longo período. Cerca de 57% necessitam de outra fonte de renda, na sua maioria são homens, sem o ensino superior e são em grande parte idosos. As unidades produtivas são pequenas, pouco organizadas tanto internamente quanto entre si e ainda não possuem técnicas sistematizadas que permitam a oferta continuada de produtos de alta qualidade. Os entraves percebidos mais relevantes estão relacionados à carência de assistência especializada, ao pouco domínio de conhecimento técnico dos agricultores sobre seus próprios produtos e à falta de incentivos públicos, inclusive financeiros. Adicionalmente, é necessário sensibilizar gestores públicos para o planejamento de programas de apoio à floricultura estadual e instituições de ensino superior para a formação de profissionais qualificados nesta área, já que mesmo com todos os entraves identificados, esse setor produtivo ainda segue em atividade.
