Various skeletal sites have different normal SUVs. Skeletal metastases have different SUVs when compared with benign findings such as degenerative changes.
This article presents a description of tele-nuclear medicine and, after outlining its history, a wide, representative range of its applications. Tele-nuclear medicine has benefited greatly from technological progress, which for several decades has provided greater data transfer rates and storage capacity at steadily decreasing cost. Differences in the practice of nuclear medicine between developed and developing countries arise mainly from disparities in their available infrastructure, funding and education levels of personnel involved. Consequently there are different emphases in their tele-nuclear medicine, which are elaborated. It is concluded that tele-nuclear medicine is important for all countries, but the emphasis on its application may differ between developed and developing nations, with an emphasis on distance learning in the latter.
Spontaneous intrahepatic portal venous shunts are rare with only few case reports published. Treatments using various endovascular techniques have been described, although no single technique has been shown to be preferred. We present a patient who was referred for treatment of a spontaneous portal venous shunt and describe our treatment approach and present a review on previously reported cases.
A 56-year-old woman with prior esophageal resection and reconstruction after accidental lye ingestion presented for management of recently diagnosed thyroid cancer. She had total thyroidectomy with pathology demonstrating bilateral well-differentiated papillary thyroid cancer measuring up to 1.0 cm and positive margins. Approximately 1 month after surgery, I whole-body scan was obtained. Planar images demonstrated linear I uptake in the thorax, compatible with accumulation in the neoesophagus. Given the patient's postsurgical anatomy, SPECT/CT of the thorax was done and demonstrated additional focal I uptake in the left lower neck, compatible with residual thyroid tissue versus thyroid cancer (lymph node metastasis).
