Tendo em vista a exposição de pacientes à radiação em virtude da necessidade de realização de radiografia odontológica principalmente para fins diagnósticos e de planejamento de tratamento, buscou-se analisar os efeitos dos raios X no organismo humano. Para tanto, foi realizada uma busca acerca das principais temáticas relacionadas à radiação e à odontologia na literatura científica, que abordassem fatores contribuintes para uma maior exposição e possíveis riscos associados à radiação ionizante. Abordou-se a finalidade do uso de raios X na odontologia e as medidas de proteção radiológica regulamentadas frente às adotadas pelos profissionais da área em seu cotidiano, o que permitiu uma imersão ao contexto em que a exposição às ondas eletromagnéticas em discussão ocorreu. Assim, por meio dos estudos realizados foi possível concluir que os exames radiográficos são de extrema importância para que o cirurgião dentista possa avaliar de maneira satisfatória o que realmente o paciente precisa e desta tal maneira criar um planejamento de tratamento mais eficaz para tal. Além disso, a pesquisa da literatura revela que a dose recebida pelos pacientes durante um exame de radiografia dentária é muito baixa em comparação a outras exposições e, portanto, não apresenta riscos a eles.
