PD fallers present worse scores in TMS, and there is a significant correlation between difficulty rolling over in bed and TMS score.
Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that can dramatically impair patient quality of life (QoL).ObjectiveTo analyze the QoL, motor capacity, depression, anxiety and social phobia of individuals who attended a patient support group (PSG) compared to non-participants.MethodsA cross-sectional study was performed. The sample consisted of 20 individuals with PD who attended a PSG and another 20 PD patients who did not attend a support group for PD patients, serving as the control group (nPSG). All patients answered questionnaires on motor capacity (UPDRS), QoL (Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire- PDQ-39), depression (Beck Depression Inventory), anxiety (Beck Anxiety Inventory) and social phobia (Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale). To determine data distribution, the Shapiro-Wilk test was performed. For comparison of means, Student's t-test was applied. In cases of asymmetry, the Mann-Whitney test was employed. To assess the association between the scales, Pearson's correlation coefficient (symmetric distribution) and Spearman's coefficient (asymmetric distribution) were applied. For the association between qualitative variables, Pearson's Chi-squared test was performed. A significance level of 5% (p≤0.05) was adopted.ResultsIndividuals in the PSG had a significantly better QoL (p=0.002), and lower depression (p=0.026), anxiety (p<0.001) and social phobia (p=0.01) scores compared to the nPSG.ConclusionThe participation of PD patients in social activities such as support groups is associated with better QoL and fewer symptoms of depression, anxiety and social phobia.
RESUMOA ataxia espinocerebelar (AEC) é uma patologia caracterizada pelo déficit na execução de movimentos coordenados com progressiva oscilação postural associada à dificuldade de manutenção do equilíbrio e diversas outras alterações motoras. A marcha pode ficar atáxica, com ampliação da base de sustentação, instabilidade, passos irregulares e mais lentos, lateropulsão e tremor na amplitude de movimento, sendo o tratamento fisioterapêutico uma importante alternativa para a melhora das disfunções decorrentes desta patologia. Objetivo. Realizar, com base na literatura científica, uma revisão sobre as estratégias fisioterapêuticas no tratamento da ataxia espinocerebelar. Método. Pesquisaram-se as bases de dados Medline e SciELO de 2001 a 2011, considerando os unitermos: ataxia espinocerebelar, Fisioterapia, tratamento, reabilitação e seus correlatos em inglês. Resultados. Foram encontrados 33 estudos que tivessem como tema principal a ataxia, sendo excluídos 20 artigos, pois estes não relatavam a abordagem fisioterapêutica para este tipo de patologia. Após análise, 13 referências foram utilizadas. Conclusões. Após a realização deste estudo, destaca--se a importância da Fisioterapia no tratamento dos portadores de AEC, em função dos benefícios promovidos, visto que nos estudos encontrados os indivíduos apresentaram melhora dos sintomas decorrentes desta patologia. The gait may be ataxic, with broadening the base of support, instability, irregular steps and slow, lateropulsion and trembling in range of motion, so that physical therapy is an important alternative for the improvement of the disorders of this pathology. Objective. Make, based on scientific literature, a review of physical therapy strategies in the treatment of spinocerebellar ataxia. Method. The study researches the databases Medline and SciELO from 2001 to 2011, considering the following keywords: ataxia espinocerebelar, Fisioterapia, tratamento, reabilitação and its correlates in English. Results. We found 33 studies that had as its main theme ataxia, 20 articles were excluded because they did not report the physical therapy approach for this type of pathology. After review, 13 references were used. Conclusions. After this study, the importance of physical therapy in the treatment of patients with SCA becomes obvious, according to the benefits promoted, as all studies found an improvement of symptoms of this pathology. Background Levodopa is the most used and effective medication for motor symptoms of Parkinson disease (PD), its long-term use is associated with the appearance of levodopa-induced dyskinesia (LID). Uric acid (UA) is believed to play an important neuroprotective role in PD. Objective To investigate if serum UA levels are related with the presence of LIDs in PD patients. Also, we investigated the associations among UA levels and clinical features of PD. Methods We enrolled 81 PD patients (dyskinesia = 48; no dyskinesia = 33) in the present study. A blood sample was collected to evaluate serum UA levels, clinical evaluation included the following instruments: Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI-II), MDS-Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS), Hoehn and Yahr (HY), and the sub-item 4.1 of MDS-UPDRS IV (score ≥ 1). Additional relevant clinical information was obtained by a clinical questionnaire. Results Serum UA levels were lower in the dyskinesia group when compared with the no dyskinesia group. The same result was found in the UA levels of both men and women. The multivariate analysis showed lower uric acid levels were significantly associated with having dyskinesia (odds ratio [OR] = 0.424; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.221–0.746; p = 0.005). Additional analysis verified that serum UA levels are inversely correlated with depressive symptoms, disease duration, MDS-UPDRS IV and time spent with dyskinesia. A positive correlation was found with age at onset of PD symptoms. Conclusions The present study provides a possible role of serum UA levels in LID present in PD patients.
