Le calendrier sculpté au registre inférieur du tympan du portail de l’ancienne collégiale Saint-Ursin à Bourges débute par le mois de février. Comment expliquer une telle singularité iconographique dans un cycle des mois roman ? Rejetant l’idée d’une composition fortuite du calendrier et invalidant les correspondances calendaires liturgiques, l’étude tente de répondre à cette question en croisant les données historiques, archéologiques et anthropologiques. La clé de lecture de cette particularité iconographique semble être l’ours, qui fut pendant longtemps le roi des animaux dans l’Occident septentrional, avant que l’Église ne le détrône au profit du lion. Sa place dans l’imaginaire des hommes du Moyen Âge – notamment dans le Berry – est probablement à l’origine de la mise en place d’une habile manipulation hagiographique ayant conduit à l’invention d’une stratégie visuelle de christianisation.
