The exponential increase in the number of channels for the dissemination of texts over the past two decades calls for a re-examination of the very idea of reading. Today, digital media has become the tool of choice for a growing number of readers and necessarily directs their modes and conditions of reading. These modes and conditions have become a distinct subject of multidisciplinary research grounded in the key concept of multi-modal media literacy. Such literacy takes into account not only changes in individual forms of media, but changes in an entire media environment that integrates printed matter, audiovisual technology, telephony and the computer. The article describes the genesis of media literacy, particularly in the scholastic context, and analyzes its epistemological and empirical paradigms in order to update the understanding of reading. It argues that from now on classic literacy must live with and evolve alongside media literacy in order to broaden the very notions of text and reading
